Richard, I'm with you! I have not seen one episode of most of the shows I hear people talking about daily. I have missed the entire runs of numerous popular series -- from pilot to cancellation -- and I can't say I've lost any sleep over it.

Shows I've not seen even one episode of:
  • The Sopranos
  • Seinfeld
  • Current crop of CSI shows, legal shows, medical shows, whatever they are
  • Dallas
  • American Idol
  • 24
  • Survivor
  • ...the list goes on and on
So, as for living without a TV, I have. I lived entirely without one for well over a year, as I worked on my intermission clock project several years ago. Had a lot of 16 hour days on that. [Cool] The only real time I watch TV is when I put on a DVD or video. Stuff I like. I sat down and watched about 10 minutes of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" with my wife tonight (first episode I've ever seen, btw), while we were deciding on dinner.

Phew! Glad I'm not the only one. Though I've seen probably about 6 episodes total of Seinfield in my lifetime.

I never got into seinfeld until the syndicated re runs started, and even not entirely until they came on DVD. Not a huge fan but I like the show. I probably could live easily without tv, as when I went on my europe trip a few years ago for 3 weeks, I watched no tv during that time (which is a shame with all the nudity on german and dutch tv, lol). But I have my favorites I like to watch weekly, NipTuck, Simpsons, Family Guy, etc. But one thing that gets me about this thread, is how the "no tv snobs" pride themselves on watching no tv, as if it's a waste of time, but yet take the time farting around on the internet to post such a fact.

Mike, of course TV will get the short end of the stick here; most of us are/were in the motion picture business. Also, most aren't at home long enough to KNOW what the shows are. These days, at least as far as I'm concerned, it's all about my personal interests and priorities.

Time wasted watching a crappy TV show: 30-60 mins. a pop

Time wasted posting this fact on the Internet: 30-60 seconds.

I spend infinitely more time reading books and articles... and learning. Just a personal choice.

Maybe so, if indeed it is pointless. I couldn't concentrate on it for long, either. However, I just read the new Max Fleischer biography in 4 hours. The Ub Iwerks bio in about 8. Some may find these subjects boring or pointless, but to me they are infinitely fascinating. And the best thing for me about books: I take something away; I learn from them.

I discovered I am a lot like Ub; if I find something pointless, I drop it and move on. If something interests me, I focus on it intently and jump in with both feet. Time is too precious to waste - fun things are waiting!

It's all about what interests or challenges you.

Of all the things I fully acknowledge being a snob about, the "no television" thing is hardly worth the bragging rights. [Razz] This forum is communication with the outside world, an interactive endeavor, whereas staring at a screen being mentally fed whatever (mal)nourishment it offers seems to lack that quality.

I've got nothing against broadcast television, insofar as entertainment is entertainment. It's only a waste of time in my case on account of it being so BORING for me. For me.

Also, in my opinion, no book (that I choose to start reading) is pointless, as I'll always--in agreement with Tim--gain SOMETHING from it. The only book that took me as much as 30 days to read was Atlas Shrugged, several years back ... ah, fond memories of late-night Denny's coffee and chicken strips getting me through that month! I was unemployed at the time. But then, I recall watching plenty of MTV and Comedy Central at the time ... so, nobody's perfect. And it all balances out. [Big Grin]

Before I get lumped too deeply on one side of this [ahem] very serious issue ...

I certainly believe that one can take away something productive from a television program. TV CAN be a brainless waste of time, but it can also be inspiring ... if one gets inspired by watching The Biggest Loser or Fear Factor or the newest Fallout Boy music video ... then great, who can complain? As I said before, I don't watch broadcast or cable TV very often anymore ... however, I think "brainless" shows like MXC are brilliant.

I don't know ... I hate how some people live their lives around a TV schedule, but I don't want to be too far on the anti-TV bandwagon either ... everything in moderation. [Big Grin]

Ah, TV. That thing I use to watch news and sports because I live so far from a stadium or a seat of government. But up here in the mountains, the Weather Channel reigns King! (Oh, what am I going to wear today?)

I have never watched a whole DVD movie or DVD show on a TV screen. I've never rented a DVD. I haven't seen a VHS film on a TV for more than ten years. Is there anyone else out there who can say the same?

Which, IMHO, is all you need to see in order to know what people are talking about if these shows come up in conversation. After about six months of hearing it discussed in the papers, occasionally referred to on the radio and talked about by one or two friends and relatives, I finally saw an episode of Little Britain over Christmas; I'd heard so much about it from other sources that nothing seemed unfamiliar, and it felt like I'd seen every single show.
