U.S. inmates hide pig in official police car decal
quote: Inmates working at a correctional unit’s print shop in Vermont sneaked a prank image of a pig into a state police crest that is emblazoned on police cars, and 30 cruisers sported the design for the last year, according to officials.
The official crest depicts a spotted cow against a background of snowy mountains, but the inmates’ version featured one of the cow’s spots shaped like a pig in an apparent reference to the pejorative word for police, state police spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro said.
“It dishonors the memory of those past and present members, especially for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty,” Dasaro said.
Vermont contracts with correctional facilities employing prisoners to make some print products, including the cruiser decals. Police said someone who works at the print shop changed the emblem from the officially sanctioned design.
A police employee noticed the prank on Wednesday and reported it. Police said the 60 door decals would be removed as soon as it was practical.
The “source and timing” of the change to the design is under investigation, Dasaro said.
“While some may find humor in the decal modifications, the joke unfortunately comes at the expense of the taxpayers,” Police Major Bill Sheets said in a statement.

It's not often that my home town makes it onto Fox News, and I wish it had been for somewhat less gruesome reasons.
quote: Fox News YORK, England – A male student was arrested after allegedly cooking a live hamster at his apartment in northern England.
Police and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) were investigating Monday after law enforcement officers found the creature lying dead in a frying pan in the man's kitchen, in the city of York.
They made the grim discovery after the unnamed 20 year old was detained for being drunk and disorderly -- and officers inspected his student apartment.
The man was arrested on suspicion of a further offense of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, The York Press reported.
The dead pet belonged to the man's roommate, a foreign student who was said to be "distraught" by the alleged incident.
"This is a horrific and tragic incident for both the poor hamster and the owner concerned," Denise Young, a spokeswoman for the animal welfare charity Blue Cross, said. "We hope that this case is taken as seriously as it deserves to be by the relevant authorities."
The suspect was released on bail while police and the RSPCA continue their enquiries, and was due back in court March 6.
I seem to remember that hamster jokes were a running gag on F-T once upon a time - hope I haven't resurrected something...

Film-Tech's Michael Barry...
SYDNEY DVD stores are faced with extinction by 2017
Double Bay DVD store owner Michael Barry plans to buck the trend and keep the rental trade alive. Picture: Sam Ruttyn Source: The Sunday Telegraph.
Internet, pay television, online outlets and cheap DVD sales are threatening to wipe out the humble video or DVD store altogether, according to new report from market researchers IBISWorld.
The industry generated more than $1.4 billion in 2006-2007, but is expected to slump this financial year by 10.4 per cent to $983 million. And in five years -- the final year of the forecast -- revenue is expected be $858 million.
IBISWorld senior industry analyst Naren Sivasailam said almost 600 stores around the country have closed in the past five years, with 1578 remaining.
But The DVD Gallery owner Michael Barry plans to buck the trend. He has watched seven competitors go out of business since he opened his Double Bay store in 2004.
He stocks every Blu-ray disc ever released in Australia in an attempt to compete with poorer-quality downloads, offers half-price late fees on return and runs competitions on social media to entice the younger generation.
"I plan to be the last man standing," said Mr Barry, who described business as "steady". "As long as the movie studios feel there's an economic model for manufacturing the discs, then there will also be a corresponding demand for renting them."
The report says the reason for decline in business includes legal and illegal internet downloads, online rental outlets, the cheap cost of buying DVDs and limited leisure time.
"Primarily, they're struggling with a rather outdated business model," said Mr Sivasailam. "Competition has been exacerbated by technology and the drastic change in the way consumers have adopted new technology, and where and when they consume their media."
Niche operators are expected to fare best, with some businesses seeking to co-locate with food operators and other retailers to increase foot traffic.
"It is likely the major operators will position themselves as major entertainment stores, which offer computer games and other entertainment for rental, as well as other services, such as cafes and music sales.

quote: Daily Mail Former Great Yorkshire Show boss jailed for filming a man having sex with a pony
An ex-policeman and former director of the Great Yorkshire Show was jailed for two-and-a-half years today after he admitted filming a man having sex with a pony.
Charles Littleboy, 55, made the video in his stables while the man was supposedly taking part in an animal breeding practical course, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Police discovered the video along with a stash of images of horrific sexual abuse of young boys on two computers at Littleboy’s home in Howe, Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
He pleaded guilty last month to 11 counts of making indecent images of children, four counts of distributing indecent images of children, five counts of possessing extreme pornographic images and one count of possessing 3,904 indecent photographs of children.
Some of the extreme pornography related to bestiality - including the material he filmed consensually at his property, the court heard. Other images concerned sexual mutilation of men.
The film with the male pony was made a number of years ago while the man stayed at his home, Shaun Dodds, prosecuting, said.
Another film police found involved the same man having sex with a dog, the police said.
And there was naive little me thinking that "screw the pooch" was just a metaphor...

Stupid emo kids
quote: Your Emo Kid Haircut Will Give You a Lazy Eye
Hey you angsty little jerk, listen up! If you can stop rolling your eyes and cut the whole brooding thing for like 10 seconds, I have something very important to tell you: CUT YOUR HAIR. I don't say this as some out-of-touch baby boomer threatened by the slightest tinge of change, but rather someone concerned with preventing a lazy eye epidemic.
While your asymmetric haircut might Doctors in Australia say that it also blocks the view of one of your eyes to the point that it stops focusing and effectively atrophies.
Optometrists Association of Tasmania education director Andrew Hogan warned that amblyopia, the medical term for lazy eye, can result from obstructed vision caused by hair.
"If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won't see a lot of detail," he said. "And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic."
And to top it all off, the Mercury also says you spend so much time tilting your head sideways just to see anything that it's totally fucking your posture up. You are not a bird. Your body is not meant to do that. Stop it. So unless you want to end up looking like the bastard child of Forrest Whittaker and Quasimodo, I suggest you listen to the nice Tasmanian doctor.

I wasn't sure how to interpret this headline when I read it...
Beijing sets 'two-fly' rule for public restrooms
quote:
Public restrooms in Beijing must contain no more than two flies per stall, according to a bizarre new directive issued to washroom attendants.
The Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment issued the rule Monday as a "new standard for public toilet management," the Beijing News reported.
Xie Guomin, the official in charge of the initiative, told the newspaper that the two-fly rule was not compulsory, but was a new benchmark to improve the Chinese capital's notoriously unpleasant public restrooms.
Online critics pounced on the new initiative, questioning how officials planned to enforce it and whether inspectors would actually visit the restrooms to count the number of insects per stall.
Xie said, "We will not actually count fly numbers. The regulation is specific and quantified, but the inspection methodology will be flexible."
Now that I've read the article, I know there's a punchline here somewhere. But I can't quite figure it out.
