The guy lost it. Great and funny.

The letterman interview is, of course, rehearsed and suppossed to be that way. Whether it's true that Joaquin is totally wacko or just getting into character to play some wacko thing and the whole thing is mostly marketing/artistic ... who knows.
Joaquin is known to be VERY excentric in and off set, very method and generally just weird. So maybe he's jump the gun or maybe not. Only time will tell.
Regardless, I wouldn't want my daughter dating him ...
With the sunglasses on, it's also hard to tell if he's clearly on drugs or not.
My bet? Casey Affleck is actually making a mockumentary rather than a documentary. Letterman wouldn't have booked him if it was the drugs problem, I don't think. Too much liability. No more than $1, though.

I doubt the interview itself wasn't suppossed to be pretty much the way it was, as this stuff is rehearsed and prepared sometimes weeks in advance by the producers.

As you guys said, TV and movies are all about faking. A couple of weeks ago there was a big controversy here in Spain when a TV talkshow host doctored a video where he was suppossly insulting blalantly an interm girl in the program, sent it "annonymously" by email to a very critical competitor channel. They pretended it was shot by a member of the audience on a cell phone minutes before taping.
Sure enough, it got "leaked" to youtube and it was picked up as an "exclusive" by the competing channel, hammering the comedian for totally inappropiate behaviour.
Hell broke loose and after the weekend, when the talkhost presented his program on Monday, after the whole country was looking to see what he had to say, he said he'll offer an explanation at the end of the show.
Sure, the "longer version" of the video showed the "poor insulted interm girl" bringing back a big sign saying "We gotcha" and the talkhost another one that said: "I'm bad, but not this much". Few suspected, though most pro's would've picked up the quality and of the (clean) audio as superior to that of a cellphone recording under the circunstances, so it had to be fake. At least that was my vote after I watched it twice.

Hell broke loose again. The ethics commities of all TV networks were called-in to discuss what limits were acceptable (short answer=none).
As life imitates art, it's funny that this came out just a few weeks before the Bale recording became public and it's virtually identical ("star" yelling a crew member for crossing line-of-sight/distracting during rehersal/performance).
It's true that lately, due to reduced budgets therefore reduced personnel, writters, editors, producers and directors no longer polish TV programming as much and more than ever before it's being left to improv. Still, a lot more fake than people think.
That the interview may have been more or less agreed upon in those terms that were presented, it doesn't mean the Joaquin indeed may have decided to quit acting and take drugs or just go nuts. ![[Shrug]](graemlins/shrug.gif) Who the hell knows, but it all looks really doctored to me. You know what they say: "If it looks too good to be true, it probably isn't".
Depending on the possition of the staffer in that blog mentioned, he wouldn't need to be "in it" if it was arranged that way or perhaps he is "in it" now ![[Wink]](wink.gif) .
So my bet is still it's (mostly) fake. Only betting $1, though. And Joaquin is a nut case anyway, so your call if he is THAT nuts or not.
Again, I'm only betting that the interview was supposed to be pretty much that way, not that Phoenix has quit acting (if I had his money, I probably would quit too) or that he has turned into rap music (I doubt that, though), or that he is heavy into drugs (but I doubt that too).
