Posts: 3836 From: Albuquerque, NM Registered: Feb 2000 posted 07-21-2007 05:44 PM                        Yeah, the KRZR is quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) so it works almost anywhere there's digital phone service. No analog capability so it won't work in Alaska except around Anchorage and Fairbanks. And the one country it won't work in at all is Japan. The Japanese in their infinite wisdom chose GSM frequencies that no one else uses. Dammit! Chikuso! Baka yaro! Aho! Planning on going to Japan between semesters this winter and will be leaving the KRZR at home. Not sure I want to be that connected while I'm there anyway, but there's rentals like G-Call and Voicestick for that. More fun would be to just drop in to a maid or manga cafe to check messages. 10 hours on the plane each way with no phones. Not cheap either; but they work much better in Europe than in the USA. Must be a different "mode." Wish they worked this well in the USA. We'll see how it goes next week on it's first road trip.... Persoanally, I'd rather have my Motorola Brick Phone back working again! I forgot to mention that the Rzr replaced my Pantech Micro Phone... The Pantech was alot better phone with alot longer battery life and just as good of range... just so dang small it was easy to loose... and it finally did get really lost about the 12th time I misplaced it... probably hauled by now into the desert nest of some animal or other. My service provider (Virgin) does allow US roaming, but you have to book it in advance and it costs a hell of a lot. It's far cheaper to just buy a PAYG SIM card on arrival and use that, the only problem being that anyone who calls your UK mobile number won't be able to reach you. As I really don't use a mobile phone much in my everyday life at home, this isn't a problem for me: but I guess that if you need people to be able to reach you on your usual mobile number when you're out of the country, the trick is to look for a contract that doesn't sting you too much for international roaming.  |  IP: Logged Leo Enticknap Film God Posts: 7474 From: Loma Linda, CA Registered: Jul 2000 posted 07-23-2007 07:13 AM                        En route to a London meeting this morning, something happened which I was sure would have to sooner or later. Typical radio exchange: ATC: "Allegiant 582, traffic 12 o'clock three miles westbound descending through 5000, an American Fokker, report him in sight." We: "Allegiant 582's got that Fokker in sight." That was until last week, when a number of keys simply stopped working. This is probably due to the high condensation from joining me while I take baths, soaking up ambient moisture.
