HAL is an acronym for Heuristic ALgorithmic, the two competing methods of computer programming that, in the sixties, were seen as the leading conteders to produce artificial intelligence (AI). First, a heuristic -is- an algorithm, so that description doesn't make any prima facie sense; probing deeper, I know of no such contention among AI researchers in the '60s or any other era. I just meant to suggest that the whole HAL-IBM thing might be a bit more complex than they're letting on. He felt it 'detracted' the reader from the story. But it was pointed out only after the book was released. Although there was an electronics company named HAL in the late 1960's; they didn't make computers though.
