I think the Godzilla (1998) teaser was on Men in Black (1997) a full year before release. Great teaser with Godzilla foot smashing a T-Rex skeleton.

A teaser is a trailer. So, obviously, the earliest one issued for a given title would be the potential answer.

"Godzilla" (1998), if it made its debut appearance with "Men In Black" (which I believe it did) and if I did the math correctly, was issued 46 weeks in advance of the film.

"Godzilla" is a good guess...but it isn't the winner!

The trailer for YOUNG BLACK STALLION ran for at least 1 year before release. It was attached to LION KING which was released on 12/25/2002. YBS was released on 12/28/2003. I think it might also have been attached to an earlier IMAX film from Disney.

This is a tricky call, as this is not a general release, but it did play in commercial theatres with IMAX rooms.

Thanks to a delay in a certain film's release, x film's first trailer ended up being issued 82 weeks in advance. (This one should be fairly easy to figure out since it was within the last few years.)

I think you might be referring to the Ninth Gate. I know we had a trailer run for it almost 2 years earlier than it's release due to the whole controversy with Polanski being a convicted child rapist and all.

I'm not referring to "The Ninth Gate." The hint I'll give is that the movie with the year-and-a-half-in-advance trailer was (1) released this decade, (2) was animated, and (3) was a huge hit.

As for "The Ninth Gate" and its delay...I'm not sure if the delay was due to Polanski and his rape charge. That incident happened two decades prior and in the time since he remained productive making films. Wasn't "The Ninth Gate" delayed because, well, it sucked ass and the marketing folks needed time to spin it into something worth seeing?

I remember the IMAX 3D Happy Feet trailer release was longer than a year. It displayed the release month accurately, so I don't think there was a delay, even though the final release scrapped the 3D.

The other recent animated feature with a very early trailer was ... Ratatouille?

After reading that Uwe Boll's latest flick has been in the cans for nearly a year before being released, I got to thinking: What's the longest a film has been "in the cans" (completely finished, festival screenings don't count) for before being released theatrically? (I dont know the answer, maybe Coate does)
