I just finished watching the ***serious drama*** Zero Hour! on TCM. It appears that it was the basis for "Airplane."

There were sooooo many similarities and parallels between the 2 films that I couldn't stop laughing. I kept envisioning the "Airplane" scenes and dialog. Many of the lines were exactly the same ...but sometimes with different meanings.

Too funny!

Yeah, in the commentary for "Airplane" (one of the best DVD commentaries I've ever heard) there is a lot of talk about how they licensed the rights to "Zero Hour" as if they were going to remake it. Some of the scenes even have the same camera composition.

"When can we land?"
"I can't tell."
"You can tell me...I'm a doctor."
"I can't say for sure."
"Can't you take a guess?"
"Well....not for another two hours."
"You can't take a guess for another two hours?"

You're a pisser. You're really funny. You're really funny.

Tommy
What do you mean I'm funny?

Henry
It's funny. Y'know, the story. It's funny. You're a funny guy.

Tommy
What do mean, the way I talk? What?

Henry
It's just, y'know, it's -you're just funny. It's...y'know, the way you tell the story and everything.

Tommy
Funny how? I mean what's funny about it?

Anthony

Tommy
Whoa, Anthony. He's a big boy. He knows what he said. What d'ya say? Funny how? What?

Henry
It's just, you're...you're funny. Heh.

Tommy
You mean -let me understand this because I don't know. Maybe it's me. I'm a little fucked up, maybe. But I'm funny how? I mean funny, like I'm a clown? I amuse you? I make you laugh? I'm here to fucking amuse you? What do you mean funny? Funny how? How am I funny?

Henry
Y'know. Just. Y'know. How you tell the story. What?

Tommy
No no. I don't know. You said. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the fuck am I funny? What the fuck is so funny about me!? Tell me. Tell me what's funny.

(long pause)

Henry(laughing)
Get the fuck out of here! Tommy!

Tommy

And the wind blew her hair into my face.
Then the wind blew her hair into her face.
And then, the wind blew her hair into the street!

"Anime and opera aren't all that different actually, except for the music and the length of the skirts. They both feature lots of hyper-theatrical people doing violent things to each other, accompanied by subtitles."

Don't make me choose between "Dodgeball" and getting blown in a parking lot in the Bronx.

You won't like the answer.
