quote: Mike Blakesley Kobe and A-Rod were "bad boys" before they got into bed with Nike. Tiger had a "fall from grace." There's a big difference.
Either we're thinking of different people or you don't follow these professional sports too closely. I cannot remember a single thing that Kobe Bryant was involved with that would classify him as a bad boy prior to his affair. He was squeaky clean by NBA stardard to the point that some suggested the rape charge was fabricated as a way of earning street cred, something he previously lacked due to his well spoken, record free presentation. Apparently it was felt by some in the marketing world that black youth were more likely to buy your products if you earned street cred via a troubled past which Bryant did not have. The rape accusation and even the less serious affair gave him some street cred which raised his marketing value, as the accusation goes.
The same can be said for A-Rod. He was a poster boy. I can't remember a single time in all his years in Seattle or Texas when he slipped up. His problems started in New York and he has shown no ill affects. He actually won over Yankee fans with his playoff performance this year bring back a world championship to Yankee nation.
Long term Tiger will show the same results. This country is quick to forgive and has a short memory when you perform at such an exceptional level. We have countless athletes, actors, and other famous personalities that have found themselves in trouble time and time again, only to come out fine. There may be thousands of people in the bible belt that don't care for Tiger's extramarital affairs, but my guess is if those same people golf, they also dream about being able to drive (a ball that is) like that and will eventually buy a product he endorses. People love the gossip, but also have no problem forgiving and forgetting. If Tiger continues to play well, he'll be just fine, just like A-Rod and Kobe.

I don't think Tiger Woods' fooling around is acceptable. But at the same time, it's none of my business either. His golf game is the only thing that interests me.
I'm not sure if his choice to take an "indefinite break" from golf is a good one for him. What will he do to maintain his golf game? One thing is certain: the indefinite break is the perfect way for Woods to get back at these TV networks for the way they've been torching him non-stop for weeks now.
Tiger Woods generates a great deal of viewer ratings for professional golf. Without him there, the ratings are guaranteed to drop quite a bit. Ad revenue will drop right along with those ratings.
quote: Mike Blakesley Chad: You're kidding, right? Ever heard of the "Bible Belt?" I would be money there are thousands of people in that part of the country already who have sworn they'll never buy any product with Tiger's name associated with it.
Many of those people would be hypocrites.
BTW, what ever happened to judging a product by its quality? I couldn't give a damn about a famous person using a product I'm interested in buying. How many people are really going to buy a Nikon camera because Ashton Kutcher holds one in the commercials?
At times I jokingly call my part of the nation the "hypocrisy belt" rather than the "bible belt." Oklahoma has no shortage of self-righteous people who love to indulge in moral hand-wringing over topics such as this Tiger Woods thing. Yet many of these same people are guilty of similar offenses or even worse things. These jerks have one set of strict rules they expect everyone else to follow and then have a different, loose set of rules for themselves. Do as I say, not as I do.
Oklahoma often ranks 3rd in the United States (behind Nevada and Hawaii) for highest rates of divorce. So I just had to laugh when the state passed its anti-gay marriage law a few years ago. This state doesn't even know how to do straight marriage correctly! What credibility do they have in being able to tell gay people what they can and cannot do? Amazing.
Nation wide, there's so much hypocrisy and self righteous judgment being cast about that it is just sickening. Americans love tearing anything down. I think this is why "reality TV" shows like Survivor and American Idol are so popular. Americans like to see someone publicly humiliated and insulted -like the way Simon dismisses people on the Idol show. We get off on that sort of thing like it is a form of pornography.
If the magnifying glass was turned 180° toward the media people and the rabid viewers of their swill I'm sure it would uncover a lot of fetid, infectious crap -some of which would make Tiger Woods indiscretions seem very Disneyland pure by comparison. TV media people aren't all pure as the driven snow.
quote: Ian Parfrey One day the world will realise that males are male by nature and that monogamy is an un-natural state for the male of the species homo-erectus. Whether modern society likes it or not, this is the "natural" behavior of male physiology and it's intent is to ensure the propagation of the species.
Is that to imply monogamy is a natural state for women either? When it comes to sexual history and accumulated number of partners women often have more past partners than men. On average, it's usually much easier for a woman to go out and get laid than it is for the average guy.
This is not to say I'm in favor of open relationships, open marriages and general "polyamory." However, I do believe a great deal of Americans are married to the wrong people or shouldn't have ever been married in the first place.
Too many Americans don't realize marriage is a very serious thing. Too many marry out of convenience, money, security or just to be married to someone so they don't have to be alone. I've never been married or had any kids. So I get these strange "why not?" questions as if to imply I'm a closet homosexual, serial killer or some other negative cliche the public has for people who have been single long term. I just haven't met the right woman yet. I'm not going to get married until I find a woman I can fall in love with and who will love me back the same way. Until then I'm staying single and enjoying it!

Monogamy is an un-natural state for males AND female biologically speaking.
In any relationship, sexual or otherwise, it takes two to participate. And you are right, it is much easier for women to get laid...for that very reason I mentioned. Males are naturally aroused. It's biological.
No-one can say that Tigger's partners didn't know he was married, what with his very public profile- and wouldn't that be part of the excitement of extramartial affairs anyway?
So, no-Tigger shouldn't be the one to cop all the blame. The women knew what they were doing, and granted so did Tigger, so to crucify Wood's singularly is just plan wrong. This will perpetuate the mindset that the male is a sexual prowler and a piece of shit. No wonder male suicide and depression is skyrocketing.
Some say he should have gotten divorced or not got married in the first instance.
Gees, I wonder how many males going through the divorce courts, losing their assets and their access to their kids are saying that right now?
One other thing. How does one know if marriage is for them unless they try it- in which case it's too late to realise when it isn't?
I've been there, done that, and guess what?

quote: Mike Blakesley Where'd you get that idea? You probably better never get married. (Or maybe you're using the word "crime" literally? If that's the case you get a pass.)
It's more the latter. Yes, marital infidelity is a sin. But who in the United States goes to jail for cheating on a spouse? In some countries you can be executed for it.
Infidelity doesn't even work as a factor in child custody disputes in the process of divorce. Here in Oklahoma a woman could be allowing a whole football team to "run a train" on her every week. Her estranged husband could be an unstained pillar of the community. Still, the courts in this state would award custody to the mother despite her immoral activities. The only way she loses custody of the child, or loses anything else (like alimony, child support payments, the house, etc.) is if she poses an immediate physical danger to the child. I don't think this situation is fair at all. It's a form of sexism, but that's the way it is even in this Bible Belt state.
I think this is one of the things that encourages widespread infidelity. No consequences. Lack of accountability. These days it seems as if only big name celebrities like Tiger Woods have something to lose by fooling around behind his wife's back.
quote: Ian Parfrey One other thing. How does one know if marriage is for them unless they try it- in which case it's too late to realise when it isn't?
There's that old saying "we learn from our mistakes." Screw that. I very much prefer to learn from the mistakes of other people and not repeat those mistakes myself.
I'm not against the notion of getting married. I hope I meet a wonderful lady who will love me back and spend the rest of her life with me. But I refuse to force the issue. I refuse to settle.
Far too many people merely settle for mere companionship rather than love because they're afraid to be alone or they're caving to pressure from others to be married just because they're supposed to be married. Some people are too cowardly to break up a relationship that is going nowhere. Next thing they know, they're standing at the altar in some church exchanging vows with someone they never meant to marry! That shit does happen! Being alone isn't all that great at times, but it's far better than the situation of being married to someone you don't love or worse being married to someone who doesn't love you. Being alone is a cakewalk compared to being in a bad marriage.
