Screeners go everywhere and get passed around with almost total disregard. A family in-law is related to a member of the academy and without fail every screener is passed along within a week or two of receipt. The Cinea player (encrypted DVDs and a special player that had to be registered and 'unlocked' before it'd play) was designed to combat this but quickly got shitcanned for many reasons.

Now they're working on streaming via iTunes as an option. Quality concerns aside, that's the answer. You've the ability to limit content to specific accounts as well as control over when, where and how many times the content is viewed.

With dynamic watermarking you could prove precisely where and when a screener was 'ripped' (assuming such technology exists and I believe it does).

Heartily agree that the release window is the biggest challenge to box office revenues. We've gotten spoiled by very short release-windows. Good movies would have longer 'legs', Hollywood wouldn't have to churn out so much junk, and better content would bring in more people. But what do I know?

Hollywood has been putting out crap movies for as long as there has been a Hollywood.

I've been going through some of John Willis' Screen World books from the 1970s and 1980s lately and I was astounded at how many of the movies from the major distributors I had never heard of. Ever heard of this one? Well, I'm sure some of the old-school projectionists here played it first run, but I can't imagine a PG rated movie coming out from Paramount Pictures today with that title.
