We had the same thing happen back in 1991. Our building is 1941, seriously heavy plaster. A whole section of the ceiling swung loose, smashed against the wall and then crashed on top of the seats. It, fortunately happened in the middle of the night, so no patrons were hurt. Luckily our then landlord's insurance paid for the repair and complete ceiling reinforcement.
As it happened the night before Madonna's Truth or Dare was supposed to open, we call that the movie God tried to stop.

I once toured a theater from the late 1920's that was auctioning off everything, including the plaster ceiling. There was door off the projection room that had a catwalk that was suspended over the ceiling. I noticed all this just hanging by wires and thought at the time, "I would not want to be in the audience during an earthquake".

Harley should keep the building and just show that Harley Davidson movie indefinitely. ;-)

That Warrenville location has now been inhabited by every chain under the sun. I am surprised anyone bothered to reopen it. I grew up very close to Warrenville in Glen Ellyn. It is a tiny town surrounded by larger towns like Wheaton and Napervgille that already have their own Multiplex's.

This one really hurts. I’ve only been in Seattle for 7 years but man I’ve had so many great memories in the Egyptian. From sold-out Twilight with Catherine Hardwicke to Mars Attacks on 35mm. From Seven Samurai on 35mm to a 4hr Frederick Wiseman documentary.

Hopefully, the guts can be salvaged. It had a working 35mm changeover system (can’t recall if it was century or Phillips).

The Golden Ticket Cinemas - Ale House Bloomington in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois opened today. This is a renovation of the former New Vision Ovation Cinema Grill, which closed in 2020.

The VIP Mattoon 10 in Mattoon, Illinois (south of Champaign) should be opening in the next few weeks. It was previously the AMC Showplace Mattoon 10 closed in August.

The movie theater in the Bayshore Town Center in Glendale, Wisconsin (just north of downtown Milwaukee) has closed again. The ACX Entertainment - Bayshore closed in September for "electrical issues" but the landlord as "reclaimed the space" due to problems with the lease.

Ouch yeah, my best friend was in Seattle for a time, I walked past the Egyptian many times on my visits, I never caught a show there but I got warm fuzzies knowing it was still there. It was a lovely cinema according to google images. How extensive was their flooding?

I was never able to get specifics out of anybody involved but i know it took months and months of work. Apparently it has operational for some time, but SIFF’s financial troubles led to them ending their contract for the theater. Hopefully someone will come along and revive it.

The screen at The Egyptian hopefully won’t stay dark much longer. A spokesperson for Seattle Central College that owns the 110-year-old former Masonic Temple building the movie theater calls …

Vancouver, BC just lost its only 5perf 70mm-equipped theater. Cineplex says they’re moving the system to another location. Fingers crossed they hold to that commitment.
Cinephiles who enjoy visiting The Park Theatre in Vancouver have until the end of this week to catch a final film there, as the long-standing cinema will close on Sunday.

One of the stars of the White House is no more.

The White House Family Theater, the movie theater which first came to be in 1942 when a cloakroom was converted into a screening room, was demolished this week as part of the destruction of the East Wing to make room for President Donald Trump’s planned $300 million ballroom.

From sporting events to film screenings, the theater provided entertainment and enjoyment to presidents and their families since the latter part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency.

According to The White House Historical Association, Roosevelt enjoyed watching World War II-era news reels in the former cloakroom in the East Terrace at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, “and took special interest in the battles fought in Europe and Asia.”

The 32nd US president demonstrated an understanding of the importance of pop culture, including movies.

“Entertainment is always a national asset,” Roosevelt said in 1943 as the United States was engaged in WWII. “Invaluable in time of peace, it is indispensable in wartime.”

Not that there weren’t movies shown in the White House before that.

Well before the installation of the White House Family Theater, then-President Woodrow Wilson screened 1915’s “The Birth of a Nation,” with the film projected onto the walls of the East Room.
