Trying to fix a DP2K-15C with spare parts

Hi, we have a old DP2K-15C that died on us, after beach salt killed the Alchemy server on it.

As the Alchemy have the ICP build in, we are trying to use a old ICP from a DP2K-19B we had a few years back on this projector, as the server we may get does not have ICP (it's like the old IMS servers)

we got the projector to boot, and display test patterns, so far so good

the problem: on Barco Communicator, it's shown as "DP2K-19B", and this cause an error, cause can't select the lens for it, as it list models that are not compatible on this projector.

How can i set the proper projector on configuration?

Since the Alchemy/ICMP failed, the projector no longer has its original ICP identity. The spare ICP you installed came from a DP2K‑19B, so Communicator is correctly reporting that model based on the configuration stored on the ICP itself. Communicator doesn’t provide a user‑level option to manually change the projector model, so the mismatch you’re seeing is expected.

Normally you’d restore the correct identity using a clone from the original ICP/ICMP, but if that hardware is completely dead and you don’t have a backup, you may not have a straightforward way to bring the 15C model/lens tables back. In that case, the practical solution may be replacing the ICMP/ICP hardware so the projector can present itself correctly again.

The ID is on a tiny card mounted on the backplane, looks like a SIM card. You can not change a 15C to anything else except by swapping that card - you can turn it intoa 20C if you get hold of an ID card from one, those two projectors are identical except for that card.
      I doubt a C would accept being a B, but maybe.
You must reflash the ICP firmware when changing one between models like from B to C. You will get a bunch of errors if you don't.
If that fails there is an ICP recovery program that gets it back to a factory new state.

Agreed with Dave. Reflash the ICP with the current version (4.5.454) using Communicator first, and if that doesn't fix it, contact Barco tech support and ask for the recovery script. Some gotchas to keep in mind if you do have to use the recovery script.

        - Ideally, ensure that both the projector's card cage and the computer from which the script is being run have a UPS backup (if the computer is a laptop, ensure that it's plugged in to mains power and has a fully charged battery). If the recovery script is interrupted midway, you will need to remove the faceplate from the ICP and hold down a button to boot it into recovery mode before you can try again.

        - For the same reason, run the script with a direct network cable between the computer and the projector's CCB (you don't want a switch problem interrupting the process).

        - You will need to install the desired base clone after running the recovery process (the ICP variant or the Enigma variant). The recovery script obliterates all the data files on the ICP, including the collection of test patterns that the projector comes from the factory with. The base clone puts them back again.

          What Dave and Leo said.

The formatters are different between B and C series and the ICP will need to be re-flashed in order for the correct firmware to be loaded. The projector identity lives on the small SIM card on the backplane.
I am a bit puzzled that an incorrectly-programmed ICP causes the SW to detect the whole projector as a B machine though. I would expect a firmware mismatch on the ICP/formatters.

In any case, reflashing the ICP is standard procedure when installing a new one.

You just need to re-run an update to 4.5.454. You don't NEED to reflash it (run the rescue) however, if it were me, I'd run the rescue because there is no need/desire to keep any old logging from its prior installation. Plus, particularly in Barcos, the ICPs "fill up" and will crash the projector if you happen to pull logs (diagnostics package) while the ICP is in that condition.

Incidentally, anytime one changes out a card in any brand projector, you are almost always best served to rerun the software update that affects that card.

As Dave notes, the projector's ID is stored on the SIM card on the backplane, so I'm also a bit surprised that Communicator is reporting a different model number. I would guess that Communicator takes the info that it uses to display the model number on the bottom status banner from the ICP rather than that card. But even that doesn't make total sense, because the DP2K-12C, 15C, and 20C have the same formatters, which is all the ICP cares about. It doesn't know about the lamp power supply modules, fans, and other differences between the three models.

wait, the backplane has the ID of the projector? cause the backplane was also swapped.

didn't imagine it had the projector info on it!

                swapping the card/chip would work?

                  Ha! There you go!

Yes, you can just swap the little cards on it and your 15C will be itself again ?

I'm afraid that this is going to be a bit of a bummer for Marlon. On the DP2K-xxC, the 2.5mm Allen head screws that hold the "intermediary plates" (this is what they're called in the service manual) between the SMPS and CCB, CCB and IMB, and IMB and ICP, are mounted vertically, meaning that you have to strip the card cage from top to bottom in order to have enough clearance to get at them with an Allen wrench or screwdriver. To create enough access to swap the SIM card, my guess is that he'll have to strip the card cage all the way from the keypad holder down to the CCB.

If this is were a DPxK-xxB projector, those screws are horizontal and more easily accessible: you'd likely only have to remove the CCB, one plate, and the IMB.

Was able to change the sim card, luckily i have small hands, was able to swap without a fuss.

projector is now propely identified as 15C

i changed the backplane a few days ago, was not easy. tons of photos, and super care to not break anything.

Werdly, now the projector is showing 0C temps on the DMD's, and now the dowser does not open, trowing an error.

the cinema controller is responsible for that, no? i may have a spare to test also. god damn beach salt

the projector died a few days ago, the SMPS burned, the alchemy server died from short on the power connector between the boards on it.

the we changed the SMPS, backplane, and tried a bunch of boards and did a lot of cleaning. we also have a IMS1000, but i believe it is not working anymore ;D

we are trying to get this projector back to work, and eventually get new projectors next year, most likely laser ones, so we can seal the room and avoid more salt from the outside air to get inside. we had 2 19B that died before, also from salt.

the owner will get a GDC server i believe to get this thing working.

Both the light engine temperature sensors and the dowser connect to the backplane. This is the dowser:

                        image.png

My guess is that you forgot to put this one back.

The light engine temperature sensors will be one of the row of three two-pin connectors to the right. Not all the rows are used by the 2K light engine (they are by the 4K). My guess is that one set of connectors are in the wrong row.

Will check the connections there. it was working yesterday, i tested the temps and dowser. today not anymore

will clean the contacts and reconnect those plugs.

thanks again, will be back tomorrow.

projector today didn't boot, ICP was just 2 red leds (the right ones)

we tested the icp on the other projector, working fine.

then we changed the backplane, we put the "original" back. same problem.

will try to get a new cinema controller to put on it. as we do not feel confortable testing with the one from the second theather (is the only one working now )

Did you get yourself some good contact cleaner? Considering you are near the sea, you might want to spend some time cleaning those connectors. Not sure what you have in Brazil but a good, lubricated, contact cleaner can do wonders in those situations.

You mean ICP STAT and FMT STAT were red?
It might indicate an issue connecting to the formatters (FMT)? The ICP in the end is driving the Formatters on the light engine. I believe the ICP won't try to run the OS if the formatters are not online.
