Brad, I did not follow the CNA-150 discussion at all and so I wasn't aware that this dispute has been a while in buidling. I'll just drop the issue and I hope you and Pat can eventually work it out between the two of you.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the SCDC platters so can't offer any help. I do have a bit of experience with the Alpha and AP platters though, so if I ever see an opportunity to help out Joe (one where people more qualified than me aren't offering their input) or another forumer with those platters I won't hesitate.

I guess one point is if a manufacturer designs something one way then use it as they design it or don't buy it. Most manufacturers welcome sujestions but often it is to costly to re think the manufactureing process to implement most of them. Also in many cases certain features were built in to meet the requests of large buyer or to work around patents

So if a theatre has purchased brand X then the people who work there and or service it must accept that and also take responsibility if they modify or operate it contrary to the terms of the warranties

One solution might be to slow down the variac like I tried, but rather than thread slower as Ken suggested (I am a hyper-spaz fast moving kind of guy) I could drill a new hole into the column to lock the elevator in a lower position than normal. Plus get the 19 inch rings and a flywheel for the projector and I think I'd be set.

Of course this is not the way the manufacturer designed it so I should just forget it, right Gord?

Paul:

The 19" center ring info is on the manuals page under "Field Bulletins".

Joe:

I have seen instances where the EEPROM in the SCDC center feed has either had memory corrupted (which then would need to be either recalibrated according to the manual or reprogrammed to be a centerfeed unit by using the serial cable and a laptop) or the SCDC centerfeed circuit board itself may be defective.

rather than drilling use a loop of film around a single pair of rollers to hold it up

Why? That would slow me down more than just threading slow. I'd have to put the loop there, then I'd have to move it as I threaded the elevator. I'd be all for something that doesn't require drilling, but it must be fast and reliable.

I'll say it again... I have phase control platters. From what I hear of the SCDC's, I am glad I do not have them.

Actually Joe, I think of all the Strong platters the SCDCs are the best. Remember I did state that half of them are working very well with no complaints (and that's coming from me). It's the other half I am trying to get to operate like the first half.

And don't worry Gordon, no modifications to the payout assembly or motors or anything like that are being made. These failed on their original design.

Design and Manufacturing who makes the platters for Potts and Strong was taken over by Strong through a stock swap when their stock was of much higher value than today.

What a creative name for a company! If I ever own my own company, it's gonna just be called "Company" or "Business". Generic is best.

No, Joe. You should follow the trend (which thankfully may have peaked) and call your business Blah Blah Solutions. For example the local Cannon factory-owned dealer went from Blah Blah Office Equipment to Blah Blah Office Solutions.

Thus, if you run a theatre you could call it "What Should We Do Tonight Solutions." Even better would be a detergent maker called "Cleaning Solutions."

But I am also fond of "Specific General, Inc." And "Clampco." (3 guesses on the origin of the latter.)
