All of my "Rain" trailers are labeled as having EX.

What's the deal? Did this used-to-be a regular 5.1 trailer at first?

BTW, I bought that Dolby Digital DVD, too. It's called "Explore Our World" and it has all of the past and current Dolby trailers on it, except for "Mancini." I was especially hoping to see that one.

On the other hand, they had a trailer I've never heard of on there. It's an EX trailer (the newest to date) called "Waterfall." How many of you have run that one?

Manny, you have a newer demo DVD than mine. I have the older "We've got the Whole World Listening" disc. That one has seven DD trailers (including the "Game" multimedia trailer). But it does not feature the "waterfall" trailer you mentioned. The disc has two featurettes about Dolby's history and an explanation of Dolby Digital audio. And then there's three audio only music clips.

What does your newer demo disc have? Are the DD trailers on it anamorphic enhanced for widescreen TVs? The ones on my disc are not 16x9 enhanced. Are there other featurettes besides the two I described? I also presume the new "Stomp" DD trailer is not on this new demo disc (since it hasn't been released to theaters yet).

The Dolby Digital "Rain" and "Aurora" trailers were both released in 1999 as part of the launch of Dolby Digital Surround EX. So, I don't think there's ever been a non-EX 5.1 version of either clip. I think "Rain" was made available first, timed with the release of "Episode I: Jar Jar Goes To Spacecamp".

Some DVDs feature the "Aurora" DD trailer. My copies of "Akira" and "T2: Ultimate Edition DVD" have it. "The Abyss" special edition 2-disc DVD (now out of print) has a shortened version of "Rain" available as a kind of easter egg on the 2nd disc.

Very interesting. But has any SRD tag ever advertised EX, other than the short "Coming Soon" teaser put out before Episode 1? What's the point of putting an EX mix on the tag if you're not going to point it out to the audience?

Isn't the EX decoders just a pro logic matrix chip. You feed the left and right surrounds into it and it decodes the information like any other stereo mix. So long as the surrounds are stereo and mono surround info will be directed torwards the center. My home stereo features EX decoding and I can play anything that has a stereo surround mix and get the center channel effects.

"Waterfall" trailer is tagged on-screen as Dolby Digital-EX. In my opinion, there's maybe a little too much text to read in that trailer.

Oh...are you talking about movie ads? I have a tee-shirt for "Austin Powers in The Spy Who Shagged Me" that has the DD-EX logo on the sleeve. But I can't swear that the trailers or posters had that tag...or even the movie itself, for that matter.

It doesn't have the documentary stuff that's on your disc. The front of this new disc says "Widescreen Format" and I remember reading somewhere that they are indeed anamorphic 16x9.

"Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" was a real DD-EX release, although you'll find no notation of it on the DVD. I think that was the 2nd DD-EX film release just after "Episode I: Jar Jar Dates a Catfish".

Aren't those test tone thingies kind of like the THX Optimode feature seen lately on a lot of DVDs? I think I do better using my receiver's built-in pink noise generator and just going from there.

Daryl, DD-EX is pretty much just as you describe, a Pro-Logic like thing. If you have a DVD setup at home, don't manually activate it on any 4.1 mono surround DVDs like "The Abyss" unless you want all your surround audio locked to the back wall.

Good to see the DD trailers are 16x9 enhanced on the new demo DVD. Too bad it doesn't have the new "Stomp" clip (assuming that upcoming trailer is any good). I'll have to think about it before buying.

Dolby Pro-Logic II is pretty damned impressive, especially for a stereo format. I am amazed that they haven't come out with "Dolby Pro-Logic II EX" which is theoretically possible. When I mix a 5.1 channel DVD on my Mac, the stereo downmix is automatically in Pro-Logic II. Amazing how well it translates.

Does Dolby only make logo trailers for digital or do they also make them for analog Dolby SR? If so, where do you buy these?

The "Temple" trailer is for the Dolby SR format. You should be able to order it from Dolby Labs. The same thing also goes for the Dolby Digital Demo DVD. You can't buy it at Amazon.com. Only the Dolby Store has it. Yours for $20 (plus shipping).

Only the new disk is available. That's too bad, as the first one had some very nice multi-channel demos, including a vocal group with a different part in each speaker. One thing the new one DOES have is information on each Dolby trailer, its production company and some additional info.

Dear colleagues,

our company has produced its own sound-demo-trailer called GONG!, presented in SDDS-8, dts-ES and Dolby EX, available in both flat and scope. This one has now replaced all trailers mentioned here before on our screens because through the years we've become kind of tired of having to pay for third-party-logo-trailers while providing free advertising space for logos that are also worthy in competing markets (= home-cinema).
