Mike,

That's wierd. When you go to this page and look up theaters in the top right, Utah isn't even listed. It's also not listed here or on the Clark's page. The Clark is currently showing documentaries. It's a typo on the page you found.

Even more troubling is why we're both up at 4 in the morning posting on F-T.

The page I linked to lists it as "coming soon." The page you linked to offers a search function for "now playing" locations. If the engagement in question hasn't begun yet, why would it be included on the thing you linked to??!!

I agree the info could be incorrect, but not for the reasons you and others have given.

(I'm staying with some relatives in New Mexico... Mountain Time Zone... It's 6:00am as I'm writing this...)

Mike,

Their website appears to be a bit screwed up. The page you linked to says coming soon in the url, but the text on the page says "now playing" in bold text. That's why I linked to the pages I did. Oh well.

Hope all's well in NM [beer]

Poor page design... Right under the bold "Now Playing" blurb it reads: "Batman Begins: The IMAX Experience will be coming soon to the following theatres. Please check with the theatre directly for launch date."

I have trouble reading fine print at 4 in the morning.

Just spoke with Seth Jarvis, director of the planetarium. They're not equipped for DMR and have no plans to modify their equipment. This just appears to be a case of a web programmer not paying attention to what's being posted. It used to happen a lot more frequently on the site.

DMR is merely a conversion process that takes standard 35mm (scope, flat, super 35, etc) films and creates a standard IMAX print by digitally removing grain and adding "sharpening" tools. AFAIK, the resulting IMAX print runs the same, regardless of original source (true IMAX photography, 35mm blow-up with or without DMR, animation files re-rendered, etc).

While that's true, and DMR'd footage has certainly been inserted into traditional large format films, when an exhibitor speaks of DMR, he or she is referring to a Hollywood studio film intended for 35mm that IMAX has modified for 1570 exhibition. What Seth Jarvis is implying is that they don't have the larger platters necessary to play these films.

The DMR term also no longer relates to films that have been culled from a 35mm source, as both Robots and Polar Express came directly from digital sources.

Not true. POLAR EXPRESS did indeed come from a digital source (therefore, not considered DMR). However, ROBOTS was indeed a DMR conversion (the "cheap" way out).

Scratch out Robots and insert Ant Bully. Robots was DMR'd in eleven days, which may be a record for shortest DMR time.

Just received an email from the Planetarium's Programs Director who, like Mr. Jarvis, confirmed that the Clark Planetarium will not be screening "Batman Begins" in IMAX. (He did mention that they have booked "Magnificent Desolation," even though that Deseret News article I linked to yesterday mentioned that Jordan Commons would have a Utah exclusive.)

I suspect the intent of the IMAX.com folks was to post details for the upcoming Sandy engagement. Someone may not have been informed of the new IMAX screen in Sandy and just assumed the upcoming "Salt Lake City area" showing would be at the Clark Planetarium. (Initially, I thought perhaps the Clark Planetarium folks were intentionally booking "Batman" to create some competition with Jordan Commons by dissuading SLC residents from traveling to Sandy to see the movie.)

Sorry, Mark. Either you misinterpreted what I wrote or I wasn't clear. What I meant by "new screen" was "the complex"..."the auditorium"...not the actual material positioned on the front wall of the auditorium and on which the image is projected.

The text in my post is not a quote from the Megaplex website (note the lack of a quote configuration). The text is mine, sourced from the page to which I linked.
