Does anyone have any experience with "easyDCP Creator"?

I've tried "EasyDCP" trial version. It worked well, but the cost is extreme.

I've also generated DCPs from the public domain software "opecinematools" (both 2D and 3D) but silent. Works great (and costs nothing).

I guess I have not tried hard enough with Open Cinema Tools, is there any instructions that someone has typed out?

See my post on ImageMagick forums for instructions.

Tools used:
- Open Cinema Tools
- ImageMagick
- Ffmpeg
- Audacity
- sed (Windows version) (* optional, see note)

(* note)
If your server can ingest SMPTE assets, then you don't need to patch the Volindex, assetmap, CPL and PKL files (at the time I documented the workflow, our DSS100 could not ingest SMPTE assets).

To better understand what is going on, see Wolfgang Woehl's Wiki

I followed this set of instructions somewhat:
Making a DCP entirely with open source tools
However I used the GUI version once I'd created the jpeg2000 images.

DCPC is based on open cinema tools. If you're running on windows, I'd suggest you start with it to get some quick results. Maybe later you will feel more comfortable with the commandline way of doing things.

The problem really is that it's quite easy to make a DCP from a still image - but if you convert video, it usually has NTSC or PAL timebases, interlacing, etc., and then you really need some good understanding about what happens when you try to convert this to 24fps for cinema.

Carsten, is there a way that you post a translation of the german manual of the dcpc software.

My german is quit rusty (highschool is way back ...).

Thanks.

I'm about to redo the whole manual, and I will probably also make an english version then. The programmer also told me he would make an english language version of the DCPC application. Not much language in there anyway.

With the new beta Fraunhofer Easydcp Creator software you can make 25/30 FPS SMPTE DCPs. I've tested a 25 fps DCP and it works on the Doremi DCP-2000 server.

You still have to have sound files and a image sequence, but more framerates make the conversion easier.

Made a descripton on how to make these with Apple Color and Apple Soundtrack pro here

With shorts screenings at film festivals the 25 fps SMPTE option will make it easier to ask filmmakers for a 25 image sequence and sound files and convert them to DCPs.

The new version also have an option to bypass the color space/gamma transform so a image sequence graded for digital cinema can be used.

The price tag on Easydcp Creator is 2000 euro but if you make some DCPs the faster jpeg2000 encoder and more framerates will be worth it.

Hmm, 25 and 30fps DCP is indeed quite interesting for festivals, ads and the like.

Do we know which projection systems will actually show these files without prior adjustments, possibly in a mixed 24/25/30fps playlist?

Hi there,
I translated the manual to the software posted earlier by Carsten. It is available at http://cinema.terminal-entry.de/downloads/DCPC_manual_EN.pdf

Hoever, I did notice that the manual on the server is a bit outdated. In the meantime the tool also supports 4K output, DCP wrapping (creating a new DCP from existing audio+video MXF in the case of faulty meta data or to change the name), the use of encryption for KDM creation, and the creation of MPEG2 MXF Interop DCPs from MPEG2 PES for E-cinema servers. Also the developer added a function called "recovery start" for resuming the DCP creation in case the process was aborted for some reason.

The tool can be found at http://cinema.terminal-entry.de

In the list of downloads you will want to download the first and fourth item (one is the actual DCPC tool, the fourth a package of tools necessary for it to run). The last item is actually a demo DCP used to check the channel seperation of your 3D installation. It features a test picture on the left eye and black for the right eye.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Carsten. I´ve tested 25 and 30 fps SMPTE DCPs on the Doremi. AFAIK the Sony and Dolby servers will not play these DCPs. I´m not sure how big bitrate the Doremi servers can handle so I used a bitrate of 200 mbit/sec instead of 250 mbit/sec in Fraunhofer Easydcp when making the 30 fps SMPTE DCP.

Found out that Easydcp Creator will adjust the bitrate automatically for 25 and 30 fps SMPTE DCPs so adjusting the bitrate manually was not necessary. I´ve posted binaries of opencinematools and Asdcplib for Mac OS X Snow leopoard on my web page that supports 25 and 30 fps. There is also binaries for openjpeg 2.0 from SVN but it supports only 24 and 48 fps. Perhaps if one would make a 30 fps SMPTE DCP with the openjpeg jpeg2000 encoder the 48 fps setting would be safer than the 24 fps setting.
http://www.knuterikevensen.com/?p=125

A free trial of Easydcp Creator can also be used to make 25 and 30 fps DCPs if you want to check if your server supports them.

If you send me a message I can send you a link to a test 30 fps SMPTE DCP.

I've tested DCPC. It is in english now and can also be used to fix an unencrypted DCP with broken metadata. If you have the MXF sound and video files it can make the rest of the metadata files. It does not yet support multiple framerates, but support is coming. I got it to work with a small fix on the sound files. I've documented my small test here:

There is also another DCP Player (of course, only unencrypted DCPs):

http://www.3dtv.at/Index_en.aspx

An BTW - VLC will play the (again, unencrypted) audio MXF-File for/from a DCP directly, if you need to listen to it for a quick check.
I'm sure they will add the video/J2k part sooner or later as well.
