Ayakawa Film God Posts: 2738 From: Waipahu, Hawaii, USA Registered: Aug 2002 posted 12-15-2009 08:04 PM                        I went to the Dolby Digital 3-D website a little while ago and had noticed there will be an additional four new 3-D screens in the Honolulu area and two more on Maui when AVATAR opens this weekend. Of the four screens, two will go into theatres that are not set up for 3-D yet and the other two will likely go into multiplexes that already have it. (2D, 35mm, Dolby Digital) Just got back from watching, and seldom have I ever made the effort to write a review (well one that wasn't solely bashing a film for humorous purposes) but I though this movie deserves a bit of my time in exchange for the wonderful time I had watching it. Initially I thought this film was going to be another over-hyped turd that we've seen so much of lately, boy was I wrong. This film is one of the best, probably the best film I have watched this year, star trek was good, harry potter was ok, night at the museum was enjoyable, but they all fade by comparison to avatar. And I've seen a lot of film this year. I thoroughly enjoyed this film from start to finish, I'm not going to tell you what it's about or what happens, you'll just have to see for yourself. It's well paced, action from start to finish, and all the elements of the story unfold at just the right time and speed. you will not be disappointed. The visual effects are absolutely stunning, I've never seen anything like it, It felt and looked a lot like the epic T-rex vs Gorilla scene from king kong but for 2 and a half hours and much much better. Fantastic. The sound mix was awesome which is something I haven't said in a long time. Sure if i thought long and hard I could invent some criticism, but I enjoyed it so mush I'm not going to bother, the pros simply outweighed any cons by an order of magnitude. If you see only on film this year, make it this one. I know that sound like the same old crap marketers spew out, but you won't be let down by Avatar. I believe this film has saved 2009, an otherwise pretty crappy year for films. I think we finally have a movie that will have "legs" I think we will be playing this for a long long time. 5/5 A+++ will watch again EDIT: Oh I just though of one major critism, those blasted audio crap code dropouts in reel 2 , but apart from that, nothing. The creativity and detail in the world of Pandora is something that will be difficult for any film to surpass. The 3D felt more 'real' than I expected, and was used excellently with only subtle extra-screen effects. I didn't want to leave the cinema, and when I did I felt exactly like the main character does when he steps out of his Avatar, our world looks dull and boring whereas Pandora is exciting, lush and vivd. The plot is very mainstream, pretty much Dances With Wolves with a bit of Fern Gully in there, but is full of action and quite watchable. And I honestly don't believe, I would have liked it better with pair of annoying sunglasses on my nose for almost 3 hours. Counting stars ? - OK, Three out of six. The Lord of the Rings goes to Space and meet A Man Called Horse. This will definitely not be a new Titanic at the box-office. A short-lived sensation in the 3D houses over the holidays, and that's it ! Thats a pretty heavy duty review, but it's a refreshing take on a movie that others are praising for the effects alone. It still doesn't float my boat, but I may be tempted to go and see it on a comp. Please Mr. Fox, send complementary passes to the address at left.
