I must be the last person here to have watched it.

anyway due to some server issues i was forced to sit through it the other day.

well i would give it 5/5 for visual effects.

However i did find 3D distracting , and always have , guess i am just old fashioned and prefer 2d.

As for the story I would still rate Star Wars episode 4 more entertaining.

No Phil, you were not the last person here at FT to see AVATAR. I saw it today for the very first time at the Dole Cannery 18 in Digital 3-D IMAX in Honolulu and my hunch was correct. I did enjoy the movie very much. The presentation was flawless from start to finish and I had a great seat to watch the movie- midway of the auditorium and right in the centre. Because the movie has been playing for almost two months, there were not too many people at the noon day showing today. Yes, the story has elements borrowed from other films but so what? George Lucas borrowed from Akira Kurosawa with STAR WARS from the master's YOJIMBO and the master himself borrowed from William Shakespeare when he made RAN from the play KING LEAR. The movie had a nice love story as well as an exciting conclusion that reminded me of old fashioned movies showing good defeating evil under very difficult conditions. The IMAX 3-D presentation was fantastic and one of the best I had seen. Phil, I am afraid I will have to differ wioth you about the 3-D. I tried watching couple of scenes with one eye closed, and picture looked rather weak in 2-D. When I viewed the movie with both eyes opened and in 3-D, everything looked so real and exciting. The digital IMAX presentation I saw was in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio and I thought it was a perfect way to see AVATAR in that format. Seeing more picture on the top and bottom made the image more visually stunning. I am praying for the eventual release of the movie in Blu Ray will be in 1.85:1 because that picture format will be more suited for HDTV displays than the 2.35:1 ratio that will yield black borders on the top and bottom of the screen.

5/5 for movie & 3-D

On our 3D of AVATAR, I added the "TRON LEGACY" 3D trailer to this film..

In short, I think 3D is here to stay...that was an "effing" good trailer!

Now that ALICE IN WONDERLAND opened today in regular 3-D and IMAX, are there any theatres still playing AVATAR in 3-D? If it is still playing, I would assume it is running in multiplexes that have more than one 3-D screen. The Dole Cannery here in Honolulu have a Digital IMAX and a Real D house and they are both playing ALICE. What are the theatres going to do if AVATAR does win Best Picture and a whole lot of technical Oscars Sunday night and millions of people who have seen it before would want to see it again-in 3-D after it had won? Theatres here after a week, had set aside one performance a day for a previous 3-D film because there was still an audience that wanted to see it. My brother is a classic example because he has not seen it yet because he felt it was going to be around in 3-D for a very long time. I told him yesterday, if he and his wife does not see it by tonight, forget about seeing it 3-D.

Avatar seems to be down to 2-D showings in SLC.

I saw Avatar last night at the Megaplex 17 IMAX and the show...a 4:15pm start...did a bang-up business. Maybe because people knew it was their last chance to see it there.

If Avatar wins best picture, all the judges should be tied up and made to watch it 50 times. Give it all the technical, etc. etc. etc. awards but it isn't best pic by a loooooong shot

I just finished reading this mornings Honolulu Advertiser and after reading the reviews of new movies opening today, I checked the local theatre listings and AVATAR is now playing in 2-D at all of the theatres except the Regal Dole Cannery 18. They are still playing it in Real D 3-D when they had converted another one of their auditoriums to the format. They are now playing ALICE IN WONDERLAND in IMAX 3-D and in Real D 3-D and AVATAR in Real D 3-D. This is a smart move by Regal Theatres because ALICE is getting very favorable reviews and the public love it and it has staying power. CLASH OF THE TITANS was not suppose to be in 3-D but will be released in that format at the end of the month clashing with ALICE. At east, the Dole Cannery is ready to play them both in 3-D. Thanks to 3-D films like AVATAR and ALICE IN WONDERLAND, public acceptance of the format, indicates 3-D is here to stay but only if exhibitors will not have a shortage of venues to play them.
