Me: I'm sorry "Some Film" isn't actually out until Friday, although we do have previews on Thursday. Customer: I though it was out today. Are they showing it at "Your competitor"? Me: No Sorry, It's not out in the whole of the UK until next Thursday, come to think of it, I'm not sure if it's even out in America yet. Customer: Ok, I think we'll go to "Your competitor". It'll probably be on there. He said that the new fangled movie sound played tricks on him. He didn't like it when the sound would move from one speaker to another. He wanted all the sound to come out of one speaker and not move around a lot. He said hollywood will mess with your head if you let them. He wanted to know if the movie he bought for was one of those moves that mess with your ears. He insisted that this film was in "wide-screen." The film was "War of the Worlds," aspect ratio 1:85. The same happened to me last week. I was told the screen was to small, cutting of the sides of the picture. The movie: War of the Worlds...... Maybe he expected scope because the trailer we showed before Star Wars was in Scope. That one WAS in scope. "The curtains haven't opened all the way in screen 6" "Is it meant to be that thin?" "The picture is getting cut off in screen 7" "Technician, check screen 5, the picture is too small" Yesturday we had a customer get so upset that he walked out half way through, said he was going to watch the film at our competitor and then go home and write a letter to our head office. ------------------------------------------ Other random musings: We show about 20 minutes of advertising and trailers before our features start and I rekon that's about a standard for most cinemas in the UK. However no customers understand this. All the customers fall in either of the two categories: 1. The customers who think we show no advertising what-so-ever. They come in at about 8:02 for the 8pm showing and panick because they think the feature has allready started. 2. The customers who highly over-estimate exactly how much advertising we have. Customer comes to box-office at 8:50 trying to buy tickets for an 8pm show. Maskings....yea, I know about the complaints that I get sometimes when I used to work for a theatre that didn't have adjustable maskings and you have a full scope screen and shoot 1.85/1 on it and patrons wallow about the screen not being filled...and you have to tell them that the owner didn't want to spend the money for such "trivial things.."as maskings since he didn't trust the motorized contraptions.. Then, in some of the other houses, it's just the opposite: 1.85/1 is used for BOTH flat and scope features....(Yeech!!).. and then they complain about some of the titles being cut off at the sides, and you have to explain to them that the screen was designed to fill up the auditorium that isn't that wide for a wide screen and the owner wanted the biggest picture..in FLAT. ...just a go-figure with some of these "indie owners". -Monte  |  IP: Logged
