My assistants get that kind of thing all the time. Either they have people trying to go above them because they are young, or because they are female (or both). Unless the assistant is completely wrong, I'm going to have their back and the customer is less likely to get what they want than if they had resolved it with the assistant to begin with.

Last night I went into the auditorium after starting the show and told two people who were still texting to stop, and one woman to take her feet off of the back of the seats in front of her.

Her boyfriend/husband/whatever took exception to me telling her that and was trying to argue that she had a right to put her feet up that way. I just said it wasn't up for debate and if he would prefer they can leave and I'll give them a refund. That seemed to settle the matter.

About twenty minutes into the movie we had a momentary power failure here, just long enough to kick the projector lamp off.

Well, hell. Now that is pretty rare occurrence -- maybe three times in the past ten years, or so.

I went into the auditorium and announced that I'll get it going again but we have a ten minute wait before I can restart it, then went back to the lobby and sold a couple of people another drink while they were waiting.

And that guy I had talked to came up to the counter and demanded an explanation as to why I had told the woman to put her feet down. My first thought was that this guy is looking to get himself kicked out so I got myself ready to have a confrontation.

I walked him over to the sign that says "Please do not put feet or legs on back of seats" (which you have to walk past to get into the auditorium) and I gave him a couple of reasons why that's a rule here. I said, "I don't try to be mean but I do try to be consistent."

To my surprise, he said, "I understand completely, thank you very much. I'm really enjoying this movie." And he went back into the auditorium completely satisfied and happy.

[Smile]

That momentary power failure and ten minute wait apparently worked out well. And I sold two or three drinks and a large popcorn while waiting, too.

Tonight - full on 60 plus tard dad goes to the bar for one of our free refills during mid show. The front of the house lady has jsut step into the bar for a couple of minutes. There is a sign at the bar and a bell - the sign says Please Wait for the Attendant. Everything here is on video - monitors everywhere.
So what does tard dad do? Does not even bother to wait and goes right behind the bar and tries to pour a refill from the pop tower. Of course the tower is locked so no pop.
I am watching all this on the video monitor and start ringing the intercom bell - does that deter tard dad. Of course not.
The girl runs to the front and what does dad say as he is standing behind the bar - "Machine does not work"
I could have taken a flip and started yelling but I was just not in the mood to kick another idiot out.
I am sure tard dad has no problem going behind the counter at the bank. I seriously do not understand how a guy like this makes it to 60? Not the first time - never kids always middled aged morons.

I don't know the exact situation, but I'm not sure if you can blame it all on "the tard dad". Maybe you should add something simple to the sign like: No Self Service.

People have been trained to pour their own drinks from soda fountains for a long time now, with the ever expanding self-service offerings. If I go to the local *plex, then I do have to pour the drink myself for example...

It's your place, so you make the rules, but I would not kick somebody like this out of my place. Yes, it's kind a stupid... can't you read the sign? But maybe it wasn't with bad intent. If a polite reminder doesn't work, well, then I guess you'd have a case kicking somebody like that out.

PS: It somehow reminds me of a "reverse case", it was at a Subway restaurant, one of the last times I've eaten there, so it has been a while back. The "Sandwich Artist" was so incompetent that I went behind the counter myself to save my sandwich from certain doom.

I once knew a manager who would occasionally take a pair of scissors and cut the film to make it look like a film break. Then he’d go down to the auditorium, apologize for the “malfunction” and offer free refills on popcorn.

Of course, salty popcorn needs something to wash it down... right? That means people would buy drinks.

Then, when all those people came back to their seats, the air would be thick with popcorn aroma and all the people who didn’t buy any popcorn would go out to buy popcorn and Coke.

He didn’t do this all the time but he did it often enough that he was known for it.

Then, again, he was also known for being a real J-bag... :

Recently we had a considerable delay on our opening night of Deadpool 2. We received a wrong KDM and it took Fox ages to confirm the right version to the KDM issuer. So, I explained to the crowd, offered refunds to anyone who wouldn't wait, and played some short films. When the movie finally started one and a half our late(!), a few people had actually left, but the concession was enormous. Made me think we should always start movies late...

Of course, an unexpected break would be the better strategy, as more people would be inclined to finish a movie they already saw half through.

Just kidding - NOOOOOOOO!

If you were close enough to consider walking around the corner to bawl this guy out, why wouldn't you walk around the corner when you saw him standing at the counter and say "Can I get something for you, sir?"

You might have sold him another popcorn or candy bar, even.

So, then you only have the following three options left:

1. Make it look so complicated, nobody even dares to touch it. I recently was at a truck stop were they had a self-service coffee machine that must have been about 12 ft. wide. It featured so many nozzles and buttons, nobody dared to touch it. The button-to-nozzle relationship was also entirely lost on me.

2. High voltage signs still seem to attract the attention of people. Maybe we should all take part in an experiment were we replace all signs by High Voltage signs and see if that improves stuff significantly.

3. This involves step 2, but instead of just bluffing, you're actually going to apply high voltage to anything that should not be touched or opened.

Everybody can read a sign that says FREE BEER.

High voltage.... Just five minutes ago I saw that one of my electric bug killers had a light out. Ok, I'll just climb up and change that.

Switched the power off, took the cover off, reached for the bulb.

BLAMMO!

Ghawd, I haven't been blasted like that in years.

Now I remember that the manual did say to discharge for 24 hours before opening the cover. [Roll Eyes]

So I've put a piece of tape with that warning on it on there for the next time I need to change the bulb...

Frank, again - people don't read signs...
Except when they say 'Free Beer', of course...

Speaking of signs Budapest Hotel always reminds me of the amount of signage that we have here at the Kingsway. Watch the scenes set in the 1960's and you will see what I mean.
Regardless the signage only serves to show the tools that argue that there was no sign that there is actually a sign.
Of course they never ever read anything and then turn all passive aggressive when they are called out.
It all comes down to a complete lack of civility and emphasis on consumerism narcissistic demand for instant satisfaction. Welcome to the world of late stage capitalism. As Lenin said we will hang the capitalists by their own polyester 35mm film or at least drop a lot of DCP drives on their heads.

We have a sign on our balcony that says, "Balcony reserved for AGE 21 and OVER due to insurance and safety regulations."

People read that one all the time, and then say "Can I take the kids up there if they're with me?" As if being with parents automatically makes the kids older.

What's funny is when parents start heading up there with a kid, and the KID says "Mom, I can't go up there..." while pointing at the sign, and then the mom says "You're with me, it'll be OK" and that's when I pop in and tell the Mom that the kid was correct.

We have almost zero signage here at the drive-in, that way we can basically make up any rule we like when appropriate without contradicting ourselves! [Wink]
