Yeah, I watched the last 15 minutes or so, and was pretty disappointed. In that space of time, they used Deus Ex Machina like five times, and contradicted my prior knowledge about Wolverine's backstory significantly. I'm going to pass on this one.

Well, the difference is that every peanut butter and jelly sandwich is exactly the same. A good movie sequel will hopefully explore different characters, different situations, or tell us more about the characters.

I'm not an X-Men fan so I can't say whether this movie does any of that or not, but consider "The Dark Knight" or (for older buffs) "The Godfather Part II." If all sequels were as good as those we could probably get by on nothing but sequels.

Or how about Pink Panther 2 -a sequel of a bad remake? Maybe the SAW series will finally run out of gas by the 34th sequel. Who knows?

Good sequels are a rarity. There's a lot more bad ones out there than good.

The real idiots are the business people who expect each successive sequel to make even more money than the last, no matter how increasingly shitty and derivative the next sequel may be.
Who are these business people to whom you are referring? I don't think that is the expectation at all - at least I've never read anything indicating anyone expects that over an indefinite period. I am pretty sure they are all aware of the law of diminishing returns. While each of the previous films in the X-Men franchise did gross more than their predecessor, eventually everything peaks, then falls off. I doubt anyone expected this new one to go over $235 mil domestic, which is what Last Stand pulled in. However, even if Wolverine brings $150 mil domestic (well on its way) in addition to the foreign and DVD sales, you make a nice profit and continue with a very successful franchise.

There are already two more X-movies in the works. A regular X-men movie for 2011 and an "Origins" entry for Magneto for 2013.

Once upon a time, a "series" was something you made for TV. Film was "art" and TV was furniture. And everybody knew that the best writers were working in film.

If they ever make a feature film version of Gilligan's Island then they're going to have to leave him on the island at the end because, you know, they got 98 episodes out of the original TV series so they ought to be able to do at least 5 movies! Maybe we'll get lucky and J.J. Abrams will do a "prequel" story about how Gilligan and the Skipper first met... and it'll have great special effects and shaky-cam and the whole thing!

True but Once upon a time before that, there were serials shown at the movies. Film was never "art" any more than books were/are art. It is art designed for entertainment. With the increasing use of DVRs, TV is drifting towards more and more reality-type shows I guess to try and make people want to watch the original airing. For instance, try to use a DVR to record "American Idol" to watch the next day and manage not to find out who was voted off before you watch.

Because of this, true original shows/series will more an more only be available on pay channels/dvd and in a slightly differnet form in movies. In order to support the budgets of high quality TV they will have to move off of traditional ad-supported TV. Either that or there will me so much product placement in the show that it will be annoying. Ad-suppored TV will still work for live events like sports.

I have no idea who's still on the show at all, so it seems I succeeded in that easily. All you have to do is don't watch and don't seek out who won.

If you work in a busy office it would be tough. My wife works at a bank and says the staff is always talking about TV shows. I wonder how much productivity time is lost to "visiting." (She says: "Lots!")

Not that I'm any better...I'm supposed to be working and here I am posting on Film-Tech!

An approximate 47% drop from weekend one to weekend two really isn't that bad in today's cinema age. I think Wolverine has some legs. At $130 mil domestic now, I don't see it reaching $200 mil, but it will easily reach $150 mil, kicking off the "summer" in a nice fashion. Of course it is impossible to know what effect the leaking had on its grosses, but from this point forward the movie will gross based on word of mouth and repeat viewings.

It's holding up really well here. Our Wednesday last week was almost as good as our previous Saturday. I attribute this partly to the fact that most times, our "last show" of the week is on Wednesday (since we're closed most Thursdays) so a lot of people thought it was the last night for the film. But it's still doing pretty decent as of today.
