The movies are coming back to Fort Myers Beach after an 8-month hiatus caused by a disastrous tourist season last summer.
Marco Movie Theater Fort Myers Beach will reopen Friday or sometime next week, said Nick Campo, general manager of both the Beach theater and another one on Marco Island.
The theater will stick to its formula of offering the latest family-friendly blockbuster movies at its four screens at discount ticket prices along with food, beer and wine, he said. "We've always been a first-run theater and we always will be."
He's got most of the old staff back and is just waiting on a health inspection, Campo said - the food operation's state license lapsed while it was closed and getting it reactivated delayed the inspection.
John Albion, president of the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, said getting the theater back is "a big deal" because it keeps visitors from leaving the island to go to the movies, "especially in the summer when you get these late afternoon rains. It's going to give people another option."
Campo, who's also one of the owners, said they shut down the theater in September after a bad summer but realized recently that a lot of the problem had been the BP oil spill that kept people away from destinations all along the Gulf of Mexico.
"It really killed business, it hurt," he said, but now the theater should be a success - he's cutting the prices of tickets and food to compensate for the ill effects of a down economy.
Showing times, ticket prices, menus and other information will be posted on fmbtheater.com but that website hasn't been put up because the theater isn't open.
Marcomovies.com gives information for the theater's sister operation in Marco Island, which has similar features.
The theater opened in December 1999 in a new building.
It was the first time in more than a decade that a theater was operating at the Beach.
