A five-screen and a four-screen located both inside and outside the local mall there. There's a sixteen-screen Rave theater down the road in Hickory Creek, but those two UA locations were the only theaters in town proper. We were planning on opening a sub-run complex there a few months ago, but ran into problems with the building's owner concerning renovations. I can't imagine it will be too long before someone else comes in and tries to capture that market. This multiplex has a colorful if convoluted history. Movie City 5 opened in the late 70's or early 80's in the back of a shopping center off Route 1 in Woodbridge. It was a sister theater to Movie City 5 in East Brunswick and Movie City 6 in north Edison. Their main competition were General Cinema twins in Menlo Park (outside the mall), Woodbridge (on Routes 1-9) and East Brunswick (at Brunswick Square Mall). GCC closed its Menlo Park twin in fall '91; its Woodbridge and East Brunswick twins soon followed. When Cineplex Odeon opened a 12-screen at Menlo Park Mall for Xmas '91 the Movie City 5 in Woodbridge went subrun. Movie City 6 expanded to Movie City 8 around '93 or so; the Movie City 5 in East Brunswick closed around '95. Clearview bought the Movie City theaters in Woodbridge and Edison in '98. Movie City 8 became the Edison Cinema, which it is to this day. Movie City 5 in Woodbridge became the Woodbridge Cinema and stayed subrun; it went subrun/Bollywood about 2 years ago, then subrun/arthouse/Bollywood for 6 months or so until it closed. In a strange quirk of bookings, Whale Rider played at the Woodbridge Cinema before it was picked up by the Loews New Brunswick megaplex! Also by coincidence, the former owner of Movie City reopened the ex-GCC twin at Brunswick Square Mall and expanded it to a 5-plex. A few years ago it expanded to 13 screens, all stadium, as Mega Movies at Brunswick Square. Who's in charge of the Mega Movies booth? One of our fellow Film-Techers -- John T. We currently have 5 locations under construction and another 5 that will begin construction next year. It was the last operating Drive In in the province. It was be in the Art deco style and have stadium seating from what I have read. Horry County has an estimated year round population of 200k. Seasonal swells nearing 1 million per week have been given by the COC in the past. There are currently 46 screens within a 25 miles radius on the Grand Strand. Why anyone else would want to build in this area is beyond me. 22 Screens have gone dark in the last four years. My days of exclusives and not having to split product will soon come to an end... I'll simply have to beat the competition with 'Film Done Right'.  |  IP: Logged John T. The current Mega Movies (in the Brunswick Square Mall in East Brunswick, NJ) is under different ownership from that of the former Movie City theaters. I should add that one New Jersey theater has changed hands. The Cinema Plaza in Flemington is being sold to Steven Kalafer, a local multimillionaire who owns the Somerset Patriots baseball team. He told the local press he wanted to restore "hometown theater" ambiance and made some anti-megaplex remarks. Kalafer did say he would keep the theater's staff but didn't say whether the theater would get any upgrades (digital sound, new seats). The Cinema Plaza is a 6-plex that does OK or poorly depending on product flow. Because the Flemington area is thin on population, people are accustomed to driving at least 20-30 minutes to see a movie. The now-closed Cowboy Pictures booked that theater.  |  IP: Logged Per Hauberg Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 883 From: Malling, Denmark Registered: Jul 2000 posted 11-07-2003 05:33 PM                        The lot of three new multiplexes has opened in Denmark during october: CinemaxX Aarhus - just about 5 miles from me - Yak ! 8 screens from 544 down to 84 seats, standard CinemaxX stuff, with fine stadium build-up, fine sound, too big screens and the picture quality following this - even a FP30E with the best optics has limits. Number of seats seems important, to be bigger than the competitian, less important the distance from raw one to screen. Even from raw 12, those handheld sceenes in the beginning of Runaway Jury wery really, really tuff. Kino, Roskilde - new 5-plex 10 miles west of Copenhagen centre. Panorama, Slagelse - new 4-plex, who presents itself on the web with drawings of exterior, showing neon signs "THX Cinema". Inside, no track of THX in any way.... Whoops. Closed: Folketeatret, Aarhus (1957-2002) Originally a 777 seat single with Bauer B 14 and mag sound, from 1964 DP70, and from mid-seventies ruined in 3, later 4 mishap small screens. Situated one block from new CinemaxX and closed allready, when the germans started to build. p.  |  IP: Logged
