The Continent Theatre in Columbus OH is reopening soon as a Cinema Grill. The Continent was a mid-70's Mid States theater that opened with 4 screens, and projectors proudly wide open in the lobby for all to see. There was even some sort of "space age" automation contraption that never did anything. This theatre always had the biggest releases, and frequently showed 70mm prints...again with the projector sitting wide open in the lobby, with the dirt and cigarette smoke being pulled to the film like a magnet. These projectors were walled up, eventually.

Cinema Grill, an eight-screen cinema-restaurant and the newest tenant at the Continent, is expected to open this month.
The Cinema Grill will combine watching movies with dining.
It will open Jan. 23 or Jan. 30, depending on the progress of opening preparations, said Jim Duffy, the chain’s executive director. "We like the setting," he said.
The former Loews nine-screen theater building was remodeled and converted into Cinema Grill as part of the $1.5 million renovation.
Duffy said work included replacing seats, adding tables and counter space in eight of the theaters and turning one theater into a full-service kitchen.
Cinema Grill will show first-run movies, Duffy said. There are plans to dedicate one or two screens to art films, he said.
Ticket prices are expected to be $4.75 for matinees and $6.50 for evening shows.
The theater also will have a high-definition digital system that will be used to show sporting events and other entertainment.
Cinema Grill’s menu will include pizzas, appetizers, sandwiches, salads and desserts. It will serve microbrewed beers and offer a selection of wines, Duffy said.
Columbus City Council approved a Community Entertainment District designation for the Continent site last year, giving it 15 liquor licenses. Cinema Grill will use one of them.
Duffy, who grew up in Upper Arlington, called the Continent an ideal location for the business.
"There is an established market here," he said. "There is a dense population . . . plenty of parking."
The Atlanta-based chain operates 42 theater/restaurant combinations in 15 states in addition to 30 traditional theaters, Duffy said.
The Continent added several tenants last year: Brewstirs, All-Star Family Sports, Performance One and the Columbus Fieldhouse Fitness Center.
National Realty Services also completed renovations on 598 apartments, 88,000 square feet of first-floor office space and the 50,000-square-foot retail space once known as the French Market.
