Are there other discount houses in competition with the Berkeley 4? Considering the location dates back to the mid 1970's when mono audio and paper thin walls were king for most multiplex locations, it seems like it would be a costly task to bring that building into the 21st century with things like 5.1 digital surround sound (done properly) and digital projection. Let's not leave out the stadium seating thing either. 2nd run/bargain houses are really in a pickle of sorts these days anyway. Here in Lawton the only surviving bargain house is the old Vaska theater, independently owned by a fellow named Jimmy Walker. The Vaska outlasted the Video Triple and Showcase Twin when Carmike took them into 2nd run status. Hollywood/Wallace weren't able to keep the Cache 8 theater afloat in 1st run or 2nd run status. The mall theater finally killed it in 1st run (since it gave customers an alternative to see movies the Carmike 8 wasn't able to book). It didn't last in 2nd run either. It seemed to have even fewer customers then. I'd like to think shitty presentation quality and poor customer service were what drove away customers. But that's not really it. Honestly, I believe the radically shortened windows of time between theatrical release and home video release were what did the damage. By the time the movie is playing at "the dollar house" the DVD is fixing to hit store shelves. If you have your full tilt 5.1 HD home theater rig at home why not pay $3.50 to rent the DVD rather than watch the show on a dimly lit screen and audio in the glory of mono? I don't know how the Vaska here in Lawton is able to last. Jimmy Walker even repairs and maintains the neon on his Vaska sign.  |  IP: Logged Paul Van Dusen Film Handler Posts: 82 From: Roanoke, VA Registered: Feb 2006 posted 11-28-2007 11:58 AM                        The only competition in town is a 12 screen Premiere, which is the main reason the Regal in town closed and we went discount. They've only been there 3 years and their theatre is already a shit hole. But it's the new thing in town, so the people flock to it. Surprisingly Carmike put an excellent DTS system in our two 300 seat houses, and full surround in the dog houses back when Godzilla came out. I would think it wouldn't be that difficult to convert us to Digital Projection. The 7 screen in Washington, NC has the exact same building layout as us, they just did their expansion a bit differently.  |  IP: Logged Scott D. The front looks the same as any other recent build, but the building itself doesn't go very far deep. Interesting side note, all 4k digital projection there.
