Two Cinemas in the UK I know off that closed last week on Thursday 1st November.

Carlton Cinema (1934)
3 screens
Cosham
Hampshire

Final Film "The Majestic"

Dreamland Cinema (1920's)
2 Screens
Margate
Kent

Final Film ""The Smallest Show on Earth"

Also to close shortly Odeon Cinema (North End) Portsmouth.

Note the Christie digital projector is an LCD type based on a Sanyo engine and 4:3. The Kinoton projectors are FP30Ds.

The theatre/lobby look beautiful though!

Though technically not a new opening, the Ambler Theatre in Ambler, PA now has its large auditorium open. The Ambler theatre was cut into 1/3rds. The back half of the theatre was made into 2 theatres....they have been opened since 2003. The front half of the original theatre is now its own theatre and has been refurbished to look like its original self but with stadium seating. It really is a beautiful theatre. The grand drape is due to be installed soon too. The front theatre will feature a mix of film and live events (mostly film though with no active fly system). The screen system is on casters and may be moved futher upstage to allow small stage shows.

Monaco is opening a new 14-plex in a new outdoor-style shopping center called Bridge Street just a mile (or less) from my house here in Huntsville. It opens November 16, 2007 and it looks like they still have a good bit of work to do to get it open by then. It's a different kind of theatre, offering VIP rooms and wine tasting and dinner. It'll be really interesting to see if this is popular, or if over time, it'll just become another regular movie theatre. I talked to a guy who was out in the shopping area handing out little pamphlets and he said there would be 4 digital projectors and the rest 35mm. I can't wait to see how this theatre compares to others because I know nothing about Monaco.

The Bridge Street shopping center is unlike any I've seen. It's like walking up a main street of a medium sized town (laid out from north to south), but with no cars to fight with. It's like an enclosed mall that isn't enclosed. There's a nice small lake that is on both sides of it and there's a channel that runs between the north and south parts, with a bridge going over it connecting the two sections. Gondola tours and paddle boats are available for a price for people who want to tour around in the water. It's very upscale.

The monstrous theatre is at the north end of the complex near the soon-to-be-completed Westin Hotel.

As of last night, only 15 stores were open for business, but as more things open (the theatre, the hotel, and restaurants) this place will be hopping (hopefully).

Evans, The "Bridge Street" type of development you described is arguably the hottest trend in retail development. A lot of people loosely refer to them as "lifestyle centers." I think they're a sort of extrapolation on trendy outlet malls and outdoor tourist/retail attractions like Universal City Walk in Hollywood. Some developments add apartments and other living spaces, night life outlets and other kinds of entertainment. The most ambitious ones may boast a convention center or concert arena.

I think "lifestyle centers" are a pretty good idea overall. Most try not to be tacky and normally do a good job with signs for store fronts and way-finding -which does much to get on my good side. Still, you get a nagging feeling it's still pretty superficial and pre-packaged very much like the old shopping mall experience. Many of these "lifestyle centers" are transforming previously run down sections of a town. I think that's the biggest plus. Plans are coming together for a "lifestyle center" type of district in downtown Lawton, OK and will be completed in several phases -starting first with a large retail project along 2nd Street. I hope the project succeeds. With Lawton looking to grow by 20,000 people or more over the next 3-5 years due in part to major expansion of Fort Sill, odds are good for that project.

To get back to topic...

The Carmike Highland 10 in Cookeville, TN has been closed for the past few weeks due to a major remodeling project. The theater is set to reopen on November 16 as a 12-plex. 2 brand new screens were added and the existing 10 houses were converted to stadium seating. Digital projection was already in place previously; 2 more d-cinema systems are being added.

I've only been to one Carmike stadium retrofit, and it felt as though the stadium was tilted so that you were about ready to fall out of your seat. (This was the Park Central 6 in Abilene, TX). I wonder if their retrofits have gotten better.

The ones in Lawton and Shawnee, OK seem pretty good. At least there isn't any tilt to them.

In 2003, Regal off sold the Bellevue Galleria Staduim 11 in Bellevue Washington. Hallet Cinemas took over that location in October 2003. Since Lincoln Square Cinemas (16 screens, stadium seating, all Dolby Digital equipped) opened in December 2003 (one block north & west of the Galleria), the traffic at the Galleria has steadily declined.

I've heard the lease on the Galleria is about up and the landload wants to convert the space to office or retail shops or something.

Actually its a brand new theater with 12 screens(the original theater was in front of it and had digitals installed but after a few months it was demolished to make way for the new theater),3 of which are silver screen with Real-D

Edit: After a closer look, this must either be Joe Redifer, or some other pretender with that "in front of my laptop" nonsense. (I doubt it's Joe because it contains typos and isn't smartass in the least.) At any rate, this board doesn't allow phony names OR locations so I'm surprised some Moderator hasn't done something about this already.

Warren West Plans Huge Expansion
