One would think the theatres in Vegas would operate different hours than ones everywhere else (much much later into the night, earlier in the morning), but with the exception of one in Henderson several years ago (my manager brought me a paper from Vegas and Henderson so I could check out the theatre directories), the operational hours are not different.
The theatres likely serve the residents and not the tourists.

Glitzy or ritzy only by current standards. None of the screens here today have any of the appeal of the screens that used to exist here (yeah, I know I sound like I'm getting old). Though this town never had a true movie "palace", even the simple lines of the '60s-era big barn houses that did exist here were miles ahead of current (lack of) multiplex theater architecture. Everything standing now just smacks of built-at-the-lowest-possible-cost cheapness. So, is there any place special to catch a film here? In this town? You've got to be joking.

Of the few notable theaters we did have, the sole survivor of pre-80's movie theater construction remains the now-shuttered 50's-era Huntridge. Originally just a typical neighborhood first-run house (but with 35mm mag sound), it was modified to become a PAC venue, used mostly by the local indie music scene up until it closed due to financial difficulties a few years ago.

There was a local grass-roots group trying to raise funds to restore the place, including film and video projection capability, but I haven't heard anything of them lately. Finding money for such projects is almost impossible here, given the town's "everything must make a buck" corporate accountant mentality. Most of the available money is going towards a new PAC to be built slightly closer to downtown as part of the on-going Fremont revitalization program that the mayor and city council are backing. The Huntridge is unfortunately just outside that redevelopment zone and continues to just sit there unused and awaiting its fate.

We used to have a couple of screens that tried all-night operations, back in the days when the town was a lot smaller and hotel/casino workers made up a majority of the population. And for some film openings, some theaters in town used to do special 2am showings for the casino worker crowd (that's how my girlfriend and I got to see the first Superman - Paul Anka and Ann Margret bought out the Fox Charleston Plaza for a 2am screening for the Caesars Palace and Las Vegas Hilton crews). But such hours don't seem to work anymore - 'Vegas nowadays is just like any other town in that regard.

And that seems like a recent change. Because when I went on a trip to Vegas a few years ago the theaters near the strip had fairly late shows. Perhaps it was a "summer-only" thing for the visitors.

Pretty much ONLY the theatre on the strip has late shows. I think the Century Orleans still has them late on the weekend, but the majority of people who go to Vegas and are up at 12:00am-4:00am aren't usually interested in seeing a movie.

Regarding the Regal Fiesta Henderson 12 above, just saw a blurb about it in this morning's Review Journal. It's an all-digital theater, apparently Regal's first, though three screens will also have 35mm film capability. They're running three days of special public screenings for various local charities prior to this Friday's official grand opening.

As Mark mentioned above, a Rave 18-plex (7 with 3D capability) to open November 16th at Town Square Las Vegas, at Las Vegas Blvd So and the southern leg of the Las Vegas Beltway (next to Fry's Electronics).

A Regal IMAX to open by the end of this year at the Red Rock Station Casino.

A Regal 16-plex to open next year at Aliente Station in North Las Vegas.

A Regal 17-plex to open next year at Durango Station in the southwest part of town.

Then we can assume that the "Big Three" digital conversion has already started by the opening of this new plex. I wonder when AMC is starting up the conversion?

AH my first post. seems like there are more closing than openings so i am happy to post an opening. we are an independent two screen theatre that opened in March of this year. we have two smaller auditoriums and are mainly second run and limited release. having grown up in theatres in the area that are all closed and torn down this is very exciting for me.

"Spider-Man 3," "Ratatouille" and "Ocean's 13" are among the titles running between 11:30 a.m. and about 9 p.m. at the 14-screen complex, the seventh Detroit-area theater owned by the Oak Park-based MJR Theatres chain.

"Perfect picture and sound every time," says MJR president Mike Mihalich, echoing theater ads touting digital projection available in all of its auditoriums. Four of the theaters also have standard 35mm equipment.

Partridge Creek is the first theater in the area to open with all-digital auditoriums. With films stored on a hard drive, the theater can promise bright, clear images with none of the lines, splices or jitteriness that plague a 35mm film print shortly into its run.

The digital projectors, which cost about $85,000 each, have been installed in an agreement through Christie Digital Systems, which charges the theater a management and maintenance fee, but gets most of its money from distributors.

"With only a few exceptions, all of the studios are distributing their films digitally," Mihalich says, noting that live satellite feeds will soon allow the theater to project concert and sports events.

Mihalich knows what patrons want based on his other theaters. That's why Partridge Creek offers extra-wide (46-inch) rocking-chair seating and tickets that can be printed from home computers or through lobby kiosks.

The 10-screen movie house will close Sunday after 10 years in business, according to Massachusetts-based National Amusements Inc. The company announced in August that Cinema 10, 4424 Lennon Road, and Showcase Cinemas East in Burton would be shuttered. The firm's 14-screen Showcase East cineplex closed Sept. 3.

"The decision to close (Cinema 10) ... was made because the theater operation was no longer viable," Wanda Whitson, a National Amusements spokeswoman, said in a news release Monday.

Whitson said "every effort" was being made to relocate Cinema 10's 30 employees to other National Amusements theaters. The chain operates more than 1,500 theaters worldwide, including Courtland Cinemas in Burton and Showcase Cinemas West in Flint Township.

Cinema 10 was built to replace the former Genesee Valley Theater, which was demolished in 2001, according to Flint Journal files. Cinema 10 opened as a second-run theater, moved to first-run fare and lately has been mainly second run.

The demise of Cinema 10 leaves five year-round commercial movie theaters in Genesee County. Besides the two remaining National Amusements houses, there are Trillium Cinemas in Grand Blanc Township and Clio Cinemas, owned by Owosso-based Neighborhood Cinemas Group, and Fenton Cinema, owned by a Grand Rapids-based investment group.

The Henrico Theatre that I mentioned a few pages back has reopened again after being purchased by the county and given a 5 or 6 million dollar renovation, not to be confused in any way with a restoration since little was preserved other than the shell, the ceiling ofthe auditorium and the marquee. Still a very nice theatre. Seating is now a little over three hundred and there is a working stage that it never had before. There is a Christie digital projector and 2 Kinoton 35s are to be installed. One of the E-7s and Peerless Magnarcs that it opened with are on display in lobby. A few introductory events are scheduled. It will take a while for it to get on the schedule of theatre groups but will probably be booked solid in a year or two.

Today is a sad day in Sydney, Bass Hill drive in, Australia's oldest continually operating drive-in theatre and the nicer of our last two remaining drive ins will close. Opened in 1957 with a 724 capacity and was twined in the late 80's.

Business has been reported as strong, but unfortunatly a case of concrete cancer in the original screen and property values in the tens of millions equals a hundred dwelling redevelopment.

Its nice to know that the Theater did not close due to a lack of customers!
