Regal sold the property and the building. Unfortunately the owner's failing health has made it impossible for him to continue to run the theatre. The building has been for sale for awhile, but with no offers. he believes that whoever buys it will probably demolish the theatre. It's sad. This will give Carmike a run for the money. They have had the city all to themselves since UA closed up the sixplex here in town. This is the first Marqee theatre in this area, facing competition from Marcus, AMC, Cinemark and a few local theatres. I was at the preview opening tonight, and I was very impressed with the operation. The building was a Regal 14-plex built in 1999, and only open for a couple of years. The wall decorations are about all that remain from the Regal operation. New seats, new carpet and it looks like new equipment. Taking a look around, I saw Simplex 35 projectors, QSC Amps, Dolby Digital and JBL speakers. I saw PAYCHECK (as the preview films were all second run titles), and it looked very, very good. Sound was quite good and the picture was very very bright, clear, solid and very clean. My compliments to the setup staff of this theatre...very nice work. Opens as a first run house, but faces competition from a very well run Marcus theatre about 1 mile away. We just found out today that we will, in fact, play day-date. Playing day/date will be a double edged sword for us. Every time they outgross us, we'll be called and questioned as to why... I'm just hoping that the 'retraining' of our staff (relating to Customer Service skills), coupled with consistent presentation pays off for us in the long run....  |  IP: Logged Mike Fitzgerald Expert Film Handler Posts: 224 From: Castle Hayne, NC, USA Registered: Jun 2002 posted 03-09-2004 07:10 PM                     Carmike announced today they will be tearing down the 6plex they have in town and building a 10 plex in its place. So in a matter of 3 weeks there has been announced a tolat of 20 new screens in a city of 75000. That will bring us to a total of 42 screens or 45 screens if you count the Cinema Grill and 6 more once the college decides as to what they are going to do with the closed 6 plex they bought as well as the Thalian Hall which shows art films almost every weekend. What a difference one month can make. WIlmington will certainly have a great choice of theaters. The Paramount Theater im Asbury Park NJ has been running mostly stage shows for years with an occasional film fest. More and more of these are happening this year and it's gaining popularity. Using the old 1600-seat barn for movies again! Right now it is video projection with rented equipment brought in as needed. Not bad, but a little hard to fill that 20 X 50 screen. Sometimes set up on the orchestra level seats, other times from the lip of the balcony, but I'm happy to see the place being used for its original purpose (built in 1929, was first theater around here built with sound). Most of the booth is there, some has been stripped but it can run again if money is available to do it, which I doubt will happen in the near future but you never know. The Paramount was my first full-time booth after I did a couple years of relief work in all the theaters so the place means something to me. A real classic. The Paramount lives! The Ashcrafts are there, and the old Western Electric standard bases (soundheads attached)! The XL's are gone but we did have the place running a few years ago with some E6s. The booth is 75% there I'd say, the sound rack still works (with a little more tinkering). The spots and FX machines are still there too! The "Easy Rider" standee is still there by the catwalks. I first worked there doing relief in 1973. Tom Carroll ran it full time that summer. I got it the next summer as "my" booth and I loved every last minute there. Still have the booth door key. The building, which sits across the street from the future new arena for the Charlotte Bobcats, will have a 10 screen theater, along with shops, theme restaurants and bars. No word yet on what theater chain is involved with these plans. The Arena and the new entertainment center will open around the same time in the fall off 2005.  |  IP: Logged
