Carmike Cinemas closed the Dunes 8. It's demise leaves a void in the discount theatre market here on the 'Grand Strand'. The old Dunes Cinema (4 screen) was razed in 1993 to make room for anupdated, then state of the art 8 plex, which soon fell to discount status in 1996 upon opening of the Broadway Cinema 16. The theatre operated under the Dunes Cinema 8 from November 18, 1994 thru June 17th 2004. The building now sits empty with the current owner 'flipping' the property for a projected 2mil profit.  |  IP: Logged R. We are in the Metro market, but hopefully far enough away that it won't effect us that much. Have to wait and see. Mainly known for being an Art House in the latter part of its life...it had back-to-back theatres with reasonably nice sized rooms. Expect to see all Christie Booths. The sound systems might be all THX as that was the case with the last location they built here. They announced another Salt Lake City location near 7200 south and 1300 east a month or so ago, this is just a couple of miles from Larry Miller's Jordon Commons 21 screener. I never really liked Centurys snack bar setup there and the way its structured takes jobs AWAY from kids. Their architect should also get the award for ugliest theatre design. 1st graders could have done a better job! Mark @ CLACO  |  IP: Logged R. Terrible, it's like a hospital cafeteria. You could be second in line for popcorn and pay 16th. Lobby also seemed very dark and gloomy almost. There advertising does state all THX auditoriums as well. Still customers seem to think bigger is always better, and they are twice as big as any other theatre in the Des Moines market. Hopefully people will realize they are treated better and have equal if not better presentation with us.  |  IP: Logged Jonathan M. It is being turned into a concert venue. Scratch another large 70MM venue (1, 400 seats) with a 65 foot screen. They closed four days earlier than their planned closing date of August 5th.. The final film was "The Village" for three days. After the final show they removed the stage & surround speakers and projection equipment from the booth. In removing the stage speakers they tore into the screen to get them. I've always thought the Cannery would be a good location since there's nothing serving that side of the valley except for the single on Nellis AFB. The Santa Fe will give Century's location across the street a run for its money. The new Redrock Station will be competing with both Regal's Village Square and Century's Suncoast. Don't know yet who's contracted to operate these new locations. More details as they come out. Oh yeah, Century is now leasing pads on the site of the former Redrock 11. At least the Merle Hay Mall Theater is still open. I saw Empire Strikes Back S.E. there. That performance is still the epitome of THX standards in my mind (upper-midwest mind you). I don't know why they bothered switching to The Village--they should have kept Spiderman 2 for the last few days.
