The Laurel Movie Haus tri-plex I reported as closing, on the previous page, is going to reopen in February. It has been sold to two partners who are going to install digital equipment.

They have a Facebook page which contains some outlandish claims, such as this gem:

quote:
Did you know that Laurel Movie Haus will have to pay the film studios between 80% and 95% of the box office receipts to show a newly released movie? This is why so many independent theatres wait for two weeks after a new release comes out to show the movie. Then, the studio's cut drops to between 65% and 80%.
I hate this kind of crap. Our costs of doing business are plenty high to talk about without having to lie to people.

Anyway I'm glad they are reopening. Anything that takes a few ticket sales out of the Billings Carmikes and puts them into the hands of a local indie is OK by me.

According to one source, the Carmike Century Cinema 8 (old Litchfield) on 14th Street will close when the new one opens. It will be interesting to see what happens with the new Carmike 12 and the older non-stadium Regal River Oaks 8 a few hundred feet from each other. If they have the same agreement that each theatre gets half of the new movies, Regal might be able to stay the way they are.
The Regal River Oaks Cinema 8 in Decatur, Alabama closed December 16th.

There are a great many people who are not Facebook members and have no intention of joining facebook, or will have anything to do with a business that requires facebook. While there is certainly nothing wrong with promoting your theatre on facebook and/or other social media sites, you should in addition have your own web page for that kind of information.

All ticket sales and movie times are through our own websites - rosebudcinema.com and timescinema.com Both are the top results when Googled (at least locally).
We simply chose to focus the marketing for this particular event in one direction.

Desperate for business to stoop low like this and hope they can fool the public? Seen this before amongst smaller, home grown companies blaming somebody for their struggles to stay in the black - so childish.

True though: anything to prevent Carmike to gain more tickets.

Does anyone know if the Point of View, in Millersville, PA is still open? They were always a little hole in the wall, but I haven't seen any ads lately and there is no machine on the phone number I have that is never answered.

From an individual with this theater: "the information and data referenced comes directly from my conversations with Technicolor representatives and major studios based on popular first run movies and our theatre seating capacity."

Well...that doesn't make it correct. First, Technicolor representatives don't have anything to do with print rental fees. And, no studio is charging 80 to 95%. Maybe the theater owner just doesn't understand the concept of the "house nut" yet. Or maybe, these people need to get themselves a booker!

I wonder if the studio salespeople would purposely over-charge a newbie who didn't know better? Doesn't seem likely but these days.....who knows?

Hey Mike: Back in '06 when I was managing a single-screen .99 cent house in NE Iowa if I grossed more than $1,000 in a week Disney charged me 90%. It was an agreement entered into by the previous manager. I played films four weeks after the break.

Robert, they might have had different terms for a "dollar house" but these people are opening a first-run operation.

I still would be amazed if there wasn't a house allowance of some kind, but at 99¢ a ticket maybe not.

NYC:
The UA 64th Street and 2nd Avenue triplex (formerly the Gemeni Twin) in NYC closed in November.

I don't have confirmation, but it looks like the Lester New Center Cinema 5 in Sunnyside, Queens is closed, although maybe they're just refurbishing for digital.

Alamo Drafthouse is taking over the long-shuttered Metro twin at Broadway and 99th street in Manhattan.

They're also opening a totally new theatre at the new City Point development in downtown Brooklyn in 2015 (bad idea IMO, since there's a big 12-screen Regal-UA a few blocks away and several other theatres nearby as well).

Williamsburg Cinemas (7 screens) opened on Grand Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Nice theatre...great sound system (in screen #1).

And finally, the press has reported that the City Cinemas Cinema 1-2-3 on the East Side and the Regal UA Union Square may close for redevelopment. Reading supposedly has an offer on the table. The only problem with that report is that I wasn't aware that Reading owned the Union Square, so I think the reporter might have been confused. That's also a relatively new theatre that seems to always be very busy.

I kind of believe the City Cinemas rumor, except that would leave the entire upper east side of Manhattan with only four theatres (19 screens).

These closing don't really surprise me. I've been predicting for some time that in the coming years we're going to see a lot of theatres close, especially in high-rent districts. It's going to be more like the legitimate theatre - a small section in each city with a few theatres. Home video and short windows are killing the theatre business.

Yes Bob as has been stated before you were in a very rare situation back in 2006. A situation that seldom if ever applies. But hey film will be around for a while, do not play what Hollywood wants you to play, and film rental can be 90%. That is a recipe for success!

Downtown safety concerns raised amid Imax theatre's closure
quote:
The upcoming closure of the Imax theatre in downtown Winnipeg has some suggesting that a perception of the city core as being unsafe may be a factor.

The Forks North Portage Partnership, which owns the 25-year-old cinema on the third floor of the Portage Place Shopping Centre, says it will shut down the venue on March 31.

Officials say the theatre, which has been showing films on the extra-large Imax screen since 1987, has been losing money and viewers in recent years.

The closure of the Imax theatre will mean Portage Place will lose one of its largest tenants.

On the streets outside the mall on Tuesday, some Winnipeggers told CBC News they avoid downtown — including the area around Portage Place — at night because they don't feel safe there.

"Safety is always a concern, and so part of what we're … lobbying for and advocating for is we need to see [a] continued police presence," said Stefano Grande of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.

"We have 18 new foot patrols downtown; the objective is to get to 50."

The Retro Dome (formerly Century 25) in San Jose, CA ceasing operations: http://theretrodome.livejournal.com/5929.html

The word is the lease wasn't renewed because the dome is planned for demolition to build more retail on that corner. The group operating the Retro Dome was primarily operating the building as a live theater with special (digital) retro screenings. I don't think the building has run film for at least 6 or more years.
