Totally predictable after the announcement that they will build a new 13plex, the Carmike Eastdale 8 closed last night (March 14, 2013). For the first time in about 30 years, Montgomery is Carmike free. It's us v AMC for the next 9 months [evil]

I was there in 2003, when the AMIA conference was in Vancouver and the screenings were at The Ridge. At one of them I met John Pytlak for the first and only time. Strange to think that four years later, we organised a tribute screening for him when the conference was in Rochester.

Anyone know what's up with the Criterion (AMC, formerly Mann) in Santa Monica? Are they killing this one in preparation for the 12/14 plex coming in on 2nd street? I would of thought the Broadway would be first to go, that place is a dump!

Closed for good Thursday (29). Shame, I really liked the place and its early/mid-century architecture. I like the Broadway as well, and the Aero. The AMC is a dump and always has been, a true blight. The deal in Santa Monica is that the city fathers have placed an upper limit on theatre seating downtown, to keep traffic down. If the AMC project in the parking garage goes forward, then I imagine both the Broadway and the current AMC will have to close.

Fuck- going to have to try and go there before then! I heard there was an effort to save it a couple years ago. Why the hell are the two split ones in Sacramento still in business??

AMC is not going forward with the Fourth Street theatre. That was in the Santa Monica Press months ago. The city is looking for a new partner, I believe the paper said.

As for the Dome in Pleasant Hill, it's all in the name of "progress." It is more important to the owners of the land to bulldoze the theatre and put in a Dick's Sporting Goods. Because, you know, that's a really good use of the land.

I'd rather those who operate the city I live in listen to the thousands of its citizens who have written letters and emails and attended City Council meetings and have told their representatives they do not want this local landmark torn down and do not want a monstrous 76,000 square foot sporting goods store in their town.

But at least the Syufy family, who still owns the land the Dome sits on, will donate some items from the building to the Pleasant Hill Preservation Society, and will erect a plaque to commemorate its one-time existence. That's nice of them, isn't it? [Roll Eyes]

Mike, he asked what I would rather have. That's what I would rather have. A unique theatre that still does very good business, instead of another soulless big box store like all the other soulless big box stores in this shopping area and all the other shopping areas in and around town.

They could even put the sporting goods store inside the dome. Or another store inside the dome. At least the structure could be saved then, even if it's not being used to show movies anymore.

I still wouldn't like that too much. Amazing how many new theaters are designed with little thought or creativity, while the truly special ones don't get enough support and end up dying, even as people keep saying how sad it is that this keeps happening.
