This has got to be some sort of pipe dream for Fridley.
New theatre could have largest IMAX screen in the US
A proposed theater called The Palms in Waukee could bring another IMAX viewing experience to the Des Moines (Iowa) metro — but this one would have the largest screen in the United States.
Des Moines-based Fridley Theatres is planning "a state-of-the-art, luxury movie theater" on 15 acres of land it purchased last year on Hickman Road between Northeast Dartmoor Drive and Northeast Westgate Drive, said Russell Vannorsdel, director of operations. The theater company also plans to bring mixed-use commercial development to the site.
"We believe strongly that the amenities of this facility and IMAX can create a regional theater destination, versus a local neighborhood theater," he said. "Our offerings at this facility will far exceed any of the offerings of our competitors."
Vannorsdel presented Fridley's plan for the 14- to 18-screen complex to the Waukee City Council on Tuesday in a bid for financial help. Decisions on an economic development package would come at a later date, depending on the company's overall investment and infrastructure needs, said City Administrator Tim Moerman. Council members are expected to meet Monday in a work session to discuss the proposal.
The Palms in Waukee will feature a full-service bar and restaurant called the Oasis Grill and Lounge with indoor and outdoor seating for up to 90 people. A second bar is planned for the mezzanine level. At least two theaters will have in-seat food and beverage service.
Fridley plans to install recliners in every theater of the 65,000-square-foot facility. The IMAX theater could also have luxury seating if designers determine it's feasible, Vannorsdel said?
The IMAX screen is planned to be seven stories tall and 97½ feet wide. If constructed as proposed, it would be the largest IMAX screen in the United States, he said. The world's largest IMAX screen is in Sydney, Australia, at 97 feet wide, according to the theater's website.
Vannorsdel said Fridley Theatres has signed a contract with IMAX to be the exclusive provider of the giant screen experience in the Des Moines metro. If it lands in Waukee, it would be the only IMAX in the region besides the 180-degree screen at the Science Center of Iowa's Blank IMAX Dome Theater. That screen is six stories tall. Other IMAX theaters in Iowa are in Council Bluffs, Davenport and Cedar Rapids.
The IMAX at The Palms in Waukee will show new releases and Hollywood blockbusters, as well as educational movties that are typical of the lineup at the Science Center. It could also show special events, such as a televised play or an opera, and sporting events, like this weekend's Iowa/Iowa State game.
Fridley hopes to break ground on the theater next spring and be open by the end of 2017.
Fridley Theatres owns 22 movie theaters in Iowa and Nebraska. The 41-year-old company recently renovated the Copper Creek Theatre in Pleasant Hill and is looking into remodeling its Springwood 9 theater in Ankeny.
There are 1,102 IMAX theaters in 69 countries.

The Camera 12 in San Jose, California is scheduled to close on Friday, September 9, 2016.
The news was posted on the theater's Facebook page yesterday:

It is with much sadness that, in spite of our best efforts, we cannot keep Camera 12 open any longer. A decade’s loss of revenue from a promised growing downtown residential market, that’s just now coming online, coupled with the staggering costs of maintaining a large, aging, poorly designed building has led us to this decision to close.
This closure does not affect our thriving Camera 3 and Camera 7 cineplexes.
I’m proud to say that Camera Cinemas is one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in the downtown. In 1975, my partners, fellow San Jose State University students and incurable film buffs Jim Zuur and Dennis Skaggs, and I, rehabbed a former South First Street shoe store and turned it into Camera One. We were tired of driving to Berkeley or San Francisco, for art, foreign and independent films. A few years later, we opened Camera 3 in downtown San Jose. In 1989, nationally renowned Cinequest Film Festival debuted at Camera 3 and grew into Camera 12 over the years.
In 2004, Camera Cinemas reopened the failed United Artists 8-screen cineplex at Paseo de San Antonio as Camera 12 Cinemas, finally bringing first-run movies on a regular basis to downtown for the first time in 40 years. It’s estimated we’ve drawn an estimated 20 million moviegoers to downtown San Jose contributing over $200,000,000 to its economy.
On behalf of my partners and investors, I wish to thank our staff for their dedicated service and to community leaders and tens of thousands of patrons who’ve kept the Cameras rolling for so many years.
To customers holding gift cards (describe appearance) they will be honored at Camera 3 and Camera 7.
In time, I’m confident that downtown San Jose will be home to a new cinema experience. Thank your understanding and support.

Chattanooga, TN: Regal Hamilton Place 8 Reopens

Strangely enough, the press release doesn't mention anything about what was done as part of the renovations. Regal's web site mentions "luxury king size recliners, first run movies and bar & lounge" as coming to the theater.
Preview Events Benefit Charities
The theater held three days of preview events this week, where movies, drinks, and popcorn were $3 each. The proceeds benefitted The Kidney Foundation of the Greater Chattanooga Area and The Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga.
"We are pleased to work with local philanthropic organizations like The Kidney Foundation and The Community Foundation," says Sandra Heinig, Public Relations Director for Regal Entertainment Group. "Come enjoy some of the best movies of the past few years during the preview days and see the pinnacle of the moviegoing experience at Regal Hamilton Place."
Grand Opening Promotions
Members of Regal's Crown Club loyalty program will receive a free small popcorn and soft drink with each paid admission between today, September 9, 2016, and Thursday, September 15. The first 100 moviegoers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (9/9-9/11) will receive a commemorative collector's ticket. One person will receive a "diamond ticket" that will entitle the winner to "Diamond Status" in the Regal Crown Club program for a year.

The Moonlight Drive-in Theatre in Virginia is reopening.

The Mosers have been married for 37 years and still remember the many dates they had watching movies under the stars.
"There were quite a few," Pam said. "It was a lot less expensive then going to the walk-in theatre," Jim continued.
The historical landmark aired its first movie in 1949, but had to close almost 65 years later because of the digital changeover. Now the old treasure is being transformed into its original deco.
"When someone comes that maybe came several years ago they can look and say, 'it looks just like it did when I came here in the 50s or 60s,' Moonlite Owner and President Kyle Blevins said.
Blevins told News 5 it will not just show movies, but concerts, music festivals, car shows, and any type of community event.
People like Teresa Quinton can't wait for future generations to share and create their own memories.
"When I was six my family came to see the first original movie of King Kong," Quinton said. "When that King Kong climbed on the Empire State Building it scared me to death! I just want my grandchildren and my great grandchildren to be able to come and do the things and have the same memories that I have."
The goal is to have the Moonlite up and running within the next few weeks, but they're asking for your help!
Whether it's helping with renovations or donating paint, the owner said he'd like for people to be involved because everyone will enjoy it.
Once ready, Sully and the new Star Trek will be the first movies to air. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children.
If all goes as planned, they'll light the sign Saturday night at 8.
