That suddenly makes more sense. A big movie theater can be a very good anchor for other businesses in a commercial/retail development. This Warren location will help bring a good amount of traffic into that development.

Here in my town there has been a decent amount of effort put into trying to revive the downtown area. Back in the early 1970's the town fathers chose to gut the heart of the downtown area, planting Central Mall in the middle of it as a quick way to clean up the downtown. The mall did clean up the downtown but also left it dull and lifeless. 40 years later the efforts to revive the downtown area have only yielded mixed results. There's a few new big box stores on 2nd Street, but not much else. I think the problem is Lawton's downtown area is DEAD after dark. Something like a big new movie theater could be an anchor for other businesses open after dark. I had an outside hope AMC would close the small Central Mall theater and replace it with a big complex downtown. But that probably isn't going to happen. Rumor has it AMC sold the mall theater and will keep the Carmike locations on the West side of town.

Galaxy Theatres will build a new multiplex at the failing Boulevard Mall on Maryland Pkwy in unincorperated Paradise in the Las Vegas area. No word on where exactly it will be located or how many screens it will have, but it will be a "luxury" recline-o-plex like their existing area multiplexes.

The announcement comes as both Macy's and JCPenney are holding store closing sales at the mall, leaving Boulevard with no traditional department store anchors. Mall management have in turn announced exciting new developments such as a customer call center, an interactive aquarium, and mini golf.

The Boulevard Mall opened in 1968 and was Nevada's first indoor mall. It currently houses around 100 businesses, about half of which are recognizable mall chains and the rest being things like Patel's Threading & Henna Art.

Regal opened their Taylorsville, UT recline-o-plex a week or two ago.

Gulbrandson said he wrote a scathing review of the place on the SLC Tribune website, but they deleted it. Perhaps he'll re-post it on that thread he had going about its construction and let us know if it has the dreaded floating screens or not.

This is Regal's first Utah complex.

Two drive-ins which were operating in 2016, will not be reopening in 2017.

1) The Mountain View Drive-In, Stanton, Kentucky, announced on their Facebook page that they will not be reopening due to the cost of converting to digital projection, and the lack of first-run 35mm movies. Their Facebook page has since disappeared, or been unpublished.

2) The Motor Vu Drive-In, Dallas, Oregon, announced on their Facebook page they will not be reopening due to the property owner having the land up for sale, and the inability to secure a long-term lease. New home construction has been encroaching around the drive-in in recent years. They've already sold their digital projector to the Hilltop Drive-In, Chester, West Virginia, so at least they were able to help save another drive-in from having to close.

The number of operational drive-ins for 2017 is currently 314, based upon the number that were open last year, less the ones which have announced they will not reopen. 305 of those locations have converted to digital, or are in the process of converting to digital for the 2017 season.

Another nine drive-in locations were still showing 35mm in 2016, two of which show retro 35mm prints, and have shown no desire to switch to DCP. Both those locations are run as more of a hobby than a business. The other seven 35mm drive-in locations are attempting to raise funds through their communities for assistance in converting to digital.

There have been a few announcements for new builds which may open later in 2017, or could be under construction by the end of the summer.

The Crescent Theater in Mobile, Alabama announced this week they will be closing in May. Reason given is inability to come to a lease agreement with their landlord. The art theatre opened in 2008.

The original Crescent Theater first opened its doors at 208 Dauphin St. in Mobile, Alabama in 1885 as a vaudeville theater. In 1912 it was converted to show 35mm silent black and white films in what was, at the time, the most up-to-date theater in the city. Rebuilt from the ground up by John Switzer, former business partner of Max Morey, the Crescent Theater was reopened in October 2008 with a mission to bring independent arthouse films to the City of Mobile. The current incarnation of the Crescent Theater will celebrate its 4th anniversary in October, 2012.

AMC is taking over the old Northrock 14 in Wichita, KS with plans to re-open it next year after an extensive remodel.

Built by Dickinson, it closed in 2012 when a developer intending to redevelop the building into office space bought it. That never happened, and it's sat empty since.

The Clark Theatre (originally a Martin theatre) in Andalusia, AL will re-open Friday, April 14, 2017 after a massive renovation by the city.

The Quad Cinema in Manhattan, which originally opened in 1972 and closed in May of 2015, reopened this past Friday after a renovation under new ownership. They claim to have kept 35mm projection in addition to the digital. The theaters were originally 160, 150, 140 and 130 seats. Don't know what they are now.

Also, the Landmark 8 at 57th Street (and 12th avenue) was due to open before the Summer, but has been pushed to the Fall. Typical for NYC.

a lot of drive-ins were designed and built for cinemascope, the field was wired for three channels (left center and right, no surround channel was used ) A standard penthouse was installed and three channel amplification. Eprad made a nice three speaker unit that you placed on the dashboard of your car and it supplied the three channel sound. Drive-ins wanting to save money used standard mag penthouses but blended the three stage channels into the one mono channel. Some indoors did the same thing to save money and still be able to play the mag only soundtracks on the early scope pix. I have a simplex penthouse with a factory '4-CH / Mix' switch built in. As well as a blue colored Eprad 3 speaker unit in my collection.

The Motor Vue in Idaho Falls, Idaho (my hometown) had a full Motiograph booth with Mag penthouses wired for stereo.

Screen was 100 x 60

They used the EPRAD stereo speaker units.

Later on, the mag was pulled out, including the penthouses and conventional Reed speakers were used.

Thanks Monte for the stereo speaker photo. I thought these Eprad stereo DI speakers had 3 speakers on the front side, right, center and left. This speaker looks like It just has right and left? Is the red button on the front a light? These stereo in car speakers are very rare and hard to find these days.

Gentry Cinema in Checotah, Oklahoma is up for auction on May 19th at 9:00 a.m. The starting bid is only $50,000. More details, pictures, etc. are available at the auction website.

Auction Listing

The Gentry originally opened in 1941 as a 400 seat single screen. It closed in about 1995. The building was used sparingly over the next several years. It was twinned and extensively remodeled in 2008. It closed again in 2010. It reopened briefly in 2013-2014. It has since served as a church. Now the church has vacated to move to a more traditional church building.
