Fridley is partially opening The Palms in Waukee, IA tonight.

Located within walking distance of my Townhouse of Solitude and by far Fridley's most ambitious project ever, the new 15-plex features one of the nation's largest IMAX screens with images projected from freaking laser beams, Fridley's proprietary large format "XL" screen with Dolby Atmos, some regular auditoriums (at least one also has Atmos), some "dine-in" auditoriums, and a "Rick's Cafe Americain" for those who want to just do lunch without a movie. Not going to say it's fancy or anything, but they are advertising a position for a "sous chef".

The building has a massive array of solar panels on the roof that Fridley claims should provide 60 percent of the building's electrical needs as well as a big EV charging station along the south side of the building that also appears to be solar powered.

Looks like the Coyote Drive-in in Lewisville, Texas is done. Dallas area Craigslist shows an auction of all equipment and fixtures (excluding the projection equipment and A/C equipment) on February 9th.

The Coyote Drive-In sure had a short life span! It opened only a couple years ago. The place seemed like a throw-back to multi-screen drive-in theaters I remember childhood in the 1970's. The five screens at the Coyote Drive-In weren't very big unfortunately.

I wonder what will happen to the property. It was just empty real estate previously. The location wasn't the greatest: behind an auto salvage yard off the old TX-121 highway. There's other industrial shops nearby and a mobile home park to the South. Just East on the other side of the Sam Rayburn Tollway lots of new McMansions are getting built rapidly. Maybe some other kind of retail or residential development will pop up on the old drive-in site.

Does anyone know what exactly is going on with IMAX and its laser-based projection system? This Fridley location might be the first new IMAX laser installation in the US in maybe over a year. At least it seems like that.

I remember seeing a report that AMC Theaters was going to install 87 IMAX laser systems in its theaters. How many of those are in the United States? Regal & Cineworld were supposed to install over 50 systems in the US and Europe. That report is about a year old and I can't tell if any upgrades have begun rolling out to theaters.

Until it was demolished in late 1979 or 1980, the Red Raider drive-in in Lubbock was located in an industrial section of north Lubbock. Oil storage facilities to it's west and ready-built houses to the east. My dad worked at Featherlite Block on Erskine Road and the screen towers were visible from the plant. I understand other drive-ins went up in similar areas in the US.

It has just been announced in tne evening paper that Hollywood cinema in Great Yarmouth & another in the same chain located in Norwich, has with immediate affect sadly gone into administration,with about 26 mainly p/time jobs disappearing.
The one in G/Y was recently refurbished,& had sony4k digital installed 3/4 yrs ago, this leaves only one more left in the chain, sad day for G/Y.

AMC 14 Van Ness in San Francisco closed fast and without any notice on Thursday Feb 7 2019. A new lease may be in the works for this badly in need of a remodel space AMC leased on Van Ness in SF CA. They had the worst small IMAX screen in SF and It kept on having projector problems the last two years. I knew something was going on the last few months as AMC was pulling equipment out like the surround wall speakers. They just left a few on each side wall. Kept only one candy counter open. The seats were the worst in SF with bed bugs last year. Lets hope a new theatre chain will come in and do the remodel work AMC did not. Plus they need to put some sort of marquee out front to even tell you It is a movie theatre and what is playing inside. May be time for Regal or the new Showcase ICON X people to take over. This area had at one time over 6 movie theatres within a few blocks of each other.

I think a marquee might be a problem, since it's a listed building.

Still, even I knew there was a cinema in there. [Wink]

Marcel**Seems most of the visiting tourists in SF never knew about a cinema in the back of the large AMC 14 building in SF. AMC never advertised like Century or Landmark.
A few movie theatres I have seen around the USA get around the old listed building marquee problem Is that they put things inside the buildings windows and not on the outside of the listed building to tell you what is playing inside.
I bet the new operators will come up with something to attract a audience when they do a upgrade.

Rumor is going around many of my movie theatre friends in San Francisco that the Cineworld Group (Regal) will be the the new company coming into SF to take on the big remodel job at the AMC 14 Van Ness.
If this happens Regal will bring in Screen X along with 4DX, PRX to the new fixed up Van Ness location.
Seems AMC has a contract for Dolby Cinema® so we may not have that treat at this Van Ness spot.
Regal Theatres under Cineworld is also doing a brand new 12 screen theatre in the Stonestown Macy's old store area of SF to replace their old twin.
It will be interesting to see what company takes over to give SF some things that the other companies don't offer.

If this would be a "modern" glass-in-steel building, you could probably put a bunch of high-powered LED screens behind them on the second floor, since many of those windows would've been barricaded anyways. But the windows in this building are not really practical for such usages. Also, you might also want to retain some natural light on the common areas on the floors above.

Maybe you could replace the current small vertical AMC banners with larger ones, containing high-powered LED screens. As long as you maintain the Art Deco look of them, I guess you'd get that design approved.

They do have an exclusive contract in the U.S., but it's hard for me to believe that it's in perpetuity. If I'm correct, I wonder how long AMC has the exclusive.

If Dolby granted AMC an exclusive on Dolby Cinema in the United States I think it was a bad move. For one thing AMC has not been delivering on all the IMAX-with-laser and Dolby Cinema @ AMC screens it has been promising. It looks like everything is at a cold stand-still. AMC even removed all the specific Dolby Cinema listings off of its web site to keep people from seeing just how little things have been changing the past year or so.

I think other theater chains would have been likely to incorporate Dolby Cinema into their busiest locations. Some might have even incorporated that angled stealth fighter look to the wall treatment that was used in the original Dolby Cinema installations in Europe.

Even if AMC doesn't have exclusivity on Dolby Cinema in the U.S., they will most likely have some kind of exclusivity within a certain radius. The Metreon and former AMC Van Ness 1000 are in walking distance of each other.

We show that 129 movie theaters in the U.S. are advertising that they are playing movies in Dolby Cinemas. All are AMC.

There might be more, but if there are, they aren't telling us. Which is the same as not doing it.
