In Santa Cruz CA the closed UA/Regal Riverfront Twin Theatre has opened this June 2019 after being closed for more then 2 years and now has been leased to a new live comedy club called DNA'S Comedy Lab.

When UA/Regal walked away and turned in the keys they gave no notice to the owners of the building who I know. The theatre was in good shape and still is. They left everything inside even the popcorn machine.

We are so glad the owners did not gut the inside and turn It into a gym/store or even tear the twin cinema down for parking!

Built as a twin movie theatre in downtown Santa Cruz CA you don't hear sound leaks, the former cinema has 500 seats on one side and 250 on the other with a nice large wide lobby.

I told the new lease owners If all goes well, as they just mostly have one of the auditoriums on the right side open for live comedy and shows at this time, they can play on DCP classic comedy films/movies at special times in the old cinema space on the left side of the lobby.

They serve wine, beer and some food.

To bad UA/Regal left so fast they even tore out the nice small neon marquee so no one else could use it with red plastic letters. To replace It with neon today would be 4 times the cost as what it cost to put in when new in the 1970's. UA/Regal just trashed the sign.

Best of luck to the new comedy place as Santa Cruz has many students and tourists that will love comedy and other live events. The Rio Theatre another former UA/Regal cinema in Santa Cruz does very well and is sold out for many of their live stage shows.

I do not believe that any of our current locations are like you describe. Ocean City was a new build (other than the shell of the building itself, which is cinder block).

Derry NH isn't a Flagship location anymore and we closed the Lewiston, Maine location.

Sadly, neon use is in severe decline in the sign industry. LEDs have been replacing neon in all internal lighting uses where the glass is not visible. LEDs also took over much of the border lighting and environmental lighting market. Since neon has such limited niche use now the costs have risen due to lack of scale. Various kinds of glass cost more since less of it is being made. The same goes for the high voltage transformers, electrodes and other components. Lots of people still love the look of neon, but balk at the cost of incorporating it into a sign, especially with the real risk of exposed glass being damaged by storms. Even national companies, such as restaurant chains, that incorporated neon into their signs are now ditching it as they re-fresh their branding schemes. Increasingly strict sign codes in many cities adds another layer of challenge. Finally the skills base of neon tube bending is shrinking fast. Very few young adults are learning the craft while many older tube benders are leaving the business.

Regarding the trashing of signs, that practice is pretty customary for a lot of national companies when they close down a location. Unless they can re-use the sign at a different location it will often get destroyed.

After motorized reclining seats came to movie theaters, it was only a matter of time before someone went all the way to create The Bed Cinema, and now that comfy option is coming to Denver.

OK, it’s only for four nights in August, but the plan is to bring it back next year.

The Bed Cinema is coming to Runway 35 Park in the Stapleton area with more than 150 beds, according to a news release, complete with pillows, blankets and lighted bedside tables. There will be food trucks and the popcorn will be free, so you don’t have to bring your own.

Use of a bed sized for two people will cost $50, while beds that will accommodate 3-4 people will go for $60-$70.

The film lineup: “Anchorman” (Aug. 15), “Mean Girls” (Aug. 16), “Back to the Future” (Aug. 17) and “Captain Marvel” (Aug. 18).

According to its website, The Bed Cinema is “coming to cities across the U.S.” this summer, although no other cities are listed. Spokeswoman Becky Simmons explained in an email, “Once we have launched this event in Denver, we will then plan the rest of the North American tour.”

How lucky are we?

Runway 35 Park is situated on land that used to be part of a major runway when Stapleton International Airport was in operation. The airport closed in 1995.

At least they've gotten a little better in the last year or so about trying to schedule one showing of their Christmas movies in a non-party format.

There of been a number of times they've shown a classic movie I wanted to see in a theater, but didn't go because they scheduled it only as a "party" showing with props and/or as a quote-along or sing-along.

I also had the bad misfortune to see one of the non-party showings of It's a Wonderfull Life (a really awesome new 4K DCP) last year that erroneously ran the party announcement before the show, so it was a constant fight to try and get patrons to shut up as they treated it as a quote-along.

Despite notifying management, they never actually confronted the patrons that brought their own props (mostly bells) to a non-party showing. :-(

Also, the "one warning" doesn't really work if they patrons who won't stop talking are the table next to you, as they invariably get aggressive towards you when the manager leaves after talking to them, resulting in them talking even louder, giving you nasty glances and occasionally throwing popcorn at you for the balance of the show.

Warren Theatres has provided more detail on their Midwest City multiplex on their website, including one little sentence at the end that is the very definition of burying the lead...

A Bill Warren owned theatre managed by Regal.

While Regal hasn't put the theatre up on their site yet, Fandango has, and lists it as "Regal Warren Midwest".

Well, that's a bit disappointing.

Hopefully they've at least ditched the deep curved screens on this build and gone with huge yet fairly flat screens like the Grand Auditorium in the Moore Warren location. Probably no Atmos in any of the houses though.

I'm still hoping Alamo Drafthouse is looking seriously at the Oklahoma City market. I could have sworn I saw a news blurb somewhere about Harkins possibly building a second location in the OKC area. If either materializes I'm rooting for a Big Show house in the Alamo location and a Cine1 or Cine Capri house in the possible Harkins location.

The Midwest City Warren Theatre in Midwest City, Oklahoma opened August 22, 2019.

The theater is owned by Warren Theatres, LLC. but managed by Regal Cinemas.

A sad day for New York City film lovers: The Paris Cinema, the last commercial single-screen theatre in the city and the last single-screen theatre in the country devoted to platform releases has finally shut its doors after losing its lease. The theatre was opened by Pathe in 1948, with no less than Marlene Dietrich cutting the ribbon. It was taken over by Loews in the early nineties, and finally wound up with City Cinemas. The theatre was 70mm equipped for a time, and hosted memorable runs of both Lawrence of Arabia and Hamlet. This was a beautiful theatre and an important West Side location that over the years was the launching screen for a great many art-house and foreign releases. It's a shame to see it go.

"The Paris is one of the last places (on the planet) that doesn't cater to short attention spans. The purple curtains stay closed while the speakers plays jazz, Louis Armstrong, big band. There are no riddles or word scrambles on the screen, and very few commercials. It's pleasant to be there. It would be a terrible shame to lose it."

There were two different theaters called Loew's State. When the original one was twinned, each of the theaters had over 1100 seats and very large screens. At some point I believe it became a Quad, but the screens were still large by today's standards, although small by the standards of the day.

After that building was torn down, a new Loews State 4-screen was built in the basement of the Bertelsmann Building (1540 Broadway, I think). That theater was always very small, but had screens with 250 to 540 seats, which is large as compared to theaters in NYC today.

With the Paris Theatre NYC now closed with It's great purple curtains (that still worked) let's hope the greedy owners will get a ton of complaints and the city of NY will get involved!

Maybe some other movie chain or even Netflix or Amazon will buy or take over the lease of this classic single NYC cinema like they are tying to do in Hollywood at the old UA Egyptian Theatre.

The landlord may have something else planed for the cinema space, time will tell.

A couple of midwest drive-ins have been announced as for sale. Typically, this is bad news, as there is no guarantee that whoever buys the drive-in will keep it running, and not develop the land for another use.

The Starlite 14 in Richland Center, Wisconsin, is for sale, along with the indoor cinema, the Center Cinema Twin. They are being sold as a package deal.

Also for sale is the Verne Drive-In, in Luverne, Minnesota.

Hopefully, by next spring both will have new owners and be reopened.

Doubtful. If the Ziegfeld wasn't saved as a movie theater (which Disney wanted to buy at one point and make the east coast version of the El Capitan), the Paris won't be either.
