Registered: Jun 99 posted 10-17-2018 09:46 AM                     National Amusements will close their 16 screen Showplace Cinema in Edgewater, New Jersey on November 12th, ending their presence in the state. The Edgewater is a well maintained place with a PLF screen and Atmos sound, they show a mixture of first-run domestic films as well as Korean, Hindi and Tagalog pictures. My understanding is that the land has been sold for redevelopment, that stretch of River Road has seen a massive rise in condo/retail space in the last few years. It had a large parking lot and a few trees plus built of cement blocks but It won't be showing movies anytime soon. We are so sad to hear about the town of Paradise CA going up in flames. Over 20 residents confirmed dead and dozens of others still missing. Meanwhile the fire is still raging. The devastation in the town is so widespread I wonder if the town will be able recover at all. So many residents there have lost both their homes and places of work. The cost of living and doing business in much of California is so ridiculously high that it may force many of those burned out of their homes to leave the state for less costly areas of the country. The fires in Southern California are terrible as well. At first glance one would think people who have lost homes in places like Malibu will have no trouble at all bouncing back since they must be filthy rich to be able to afford living there. On the other hand some people over-extend themselves badly in order to live in a high-status, high-income zip code. An event like this can create a financially disastrous situation. The last news report I heard (driving to the supermarket this morning) quoted the county sheriff's department as stating that "about 80%" of the structures in Paradise had been destroyed. So the movie theater could still be there, though if it is, I doubt if it'll have many customers today. AFAIK, there is, or was, only one movie theater actually in the city of Malibu, and the last I knew, it either had closed or was in danger of doing so. Malibu is a weird place - there are very few businesses there (apart from restaurants): it's almost entirely very high end residences and hotels. There are several in Santa Monica, just to the south (including one I used to work at, the Aero), and the other side of Topanga Canyon is a big suburban sprawl. If the fire spreads that far south or east, movie theaters will be the least of our problems. The landlords wanted them to stay so much they offered a 75% rent reduction, but it was to no avail. AMC pretty much has northern New Jersey locked up. I wonder how they will split product, of if they will at all. Many times when a movie theatre has a fire It may take days or weeks before they change the now showing times. Location is the Luxe Reel Theatre - a 11 screen complex with houses split in half, with Rockers up in the upper section and recliners in the lower section. Largest house has 200 seats, and gradually goes down to screening room size of 40 seats. Total seating capacity is just over a thousand seats. Location has the new NEC Laser Projectors. One house has Dolby Atmos. Nice location, yet no on location parking. Patrons have to park out on the actual streets, or up a block by the tracks where there is ample parking. I saw "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" there during its first run, and they are reopening tonight with a showing of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" on 4K laser projection. Here is a news article with video. It's a pretty cool place! KTVQ news article The Babcock is now considered the biggest movie theater in Montana with 700+ seats.
