Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 03-20-2018 10:32 PM                     I'm fairly sad about the closing of the "AMC Classic Lawton 8" (long known as the Carmike 8) this past Thursday night. I watched the theater get built during the summer and fall of 1994. When it opened it was only theater in Oklahoma with more than one THX-certified screen. Jack Conner (a good friend for many years) managed that theater from the time it opened in December of 1994 until 2012 when he retired from Carmike Cinemas. He previously managed a copule other Carmike locations, including the Video Triple here (the building is now home to a hardware store). He died of a heart attack on July 26, just a few days after his last day at work. Jack and his wife Elizabeth were packing up getting ready to move to Oregon and start the next chapter of their lives. The theater's brand change from Carmike to AMC bothered me a little, but the shuttering of the Carmike 8 just feels like more dirt being piled onto Jack's memory. There's no telling what will happen to the old Carmike 8 building. If the current situation was back in time 20 years odds would be good a competing theater chain would take over the site and maybe even try to go head to head with the nearby Patriot 13 in first run (despite the possibility of movie allocation). But now odds seem slim any competing chain would re-open it as a 2nd run/bargain site. The life span of theatrical releases is now so short there's hardly any 2nd run market anymore. Only so much can be done with a former 8-plex theater building. Built by Dickinson, it closed in 2012 when a developer intending to redevelop the building into office space bought it. That never happened, and it's sat empty since. The building has been extensively remodeled into a modern AMC look and layout featuring all recliner seating, a Dolby Cinema auditorium, MacGuffins bar, and extended food offerings. Ticket prices will be typical for standard seating in the market. It will be interesting to see how it affects business for the Warren 21 auditoriums, where the recliners go for a significantly higher ticket premium.  |  IP: Logged Jon P. The fourth level 13-plex operates in the former GCC/AMC/Mall operated Mall of America 14 space and, as near as I can tell, is an extensively remodeled version of the original theatre as opposed to a complete gut and rebuild. One of the originally planned 14 auditoriums was sacrificed to make room for the CMX Market "food hall", a self-serve cafeteria-style concession area with burgers, pizzas, salads, the usual theatre snacks, and more. The concept is a first for CMX and replaces auditorium seat food service, apparently the result of patrons at existing CMX properties complaining about servers interrupting the movie watching experience. Booze is also available if you cannot get through two hours of your sad existence without it. Ticket prices, which were speculated to be in the neighborhood of $25 by the media earlier in the year, are actually more aligned with the market at $5-$14. All auditoriums feature Dolby 7.1 sound. That doesn't make any sense. The Dolby screening room in NYC is relatively small and it has Atmos and it sounds pretty good. And I went to a demo room at the last AES where a speaker company (I forget which one) was showing off speakers for film mixing rooms and the demo room couldn't have sat more than 40 in folding chairs and they had an Atmos setup which was 7.1.4 and sounded great in that small space. They probably didn't want to pay for the Atmos install. Enjoyed looking at all the theatres you have collected. So many 70mm and D-150 cinemas long gone. I collect the old movie display newspaper ads from the SF Bay and LA area. (Journal Photo by Ron Agnir) MARTINSBURG — Regal Cinemas 10 will close its doors for the last time Thursday. General Manager Daniel Leonard confirmed the theater’s last day of operation is May 17. Theater management and corporate representatives of Regal Cinemas declined to provide any other information about the closure. The building that houses the cinema, located at 950 Foxcroft Ave., was built in 1998. It was previously home to HOYTS cinema. The theater contains 10 auditoriums and is one of just two movie theaters in Martinsburg.
