When it opens on Friday, Cineplex Cinemas Manning Town Centre at 153rd Avenue and Manning Drive will offer 10 auditoriums, including one UltraAVX room. The company says UltraAVX auditoriums are wall-to-wall-screen formats with reserved seating and premium sound, sharpness and 3-D capability.
The long-awaited complex gives Cineplex Entertainment a presence in the northeast, said Pat Marshall, the company’s vice-president of communications.
“We’re trying to ensure that we have coverage around the community overall and we thought that this would be a great opportunity for us when it was presented to us,” Marshall said. “It is a growing area and so we thought there was opportunity there, not only immediately but longer-term as well.”
Moviegoers in the northeast have been waiting for the new theatre complex since Empire announced its intention in 2012 to open on the Manning site by the end of that year. Empire then bowed out of the movie-exhibition business in 2013 to focus on its grocery operations such as Sobeys. The company sold its theatres in separate deals to rivals Landmark Cinemas and Cineplex, which acquired Empire’s Manning multi-screen development.
That means the theatre differs in design from other Cineplex properties.
“It isn’t our traditional design, but once we did acquire the location we did try to make it more akin to ours,” Marshall said. “People will see a beautiful, new, state-of-the-art theatre which will have our UltraAVX technology.”
In addition to the traditional movie offerings of pop, popcorn and candy, the theatre will serve Angus burgers, hotdogs, pizza, wraps, frozen yogurt and Starbucks coffee.
Cineplex has 16 theatres in Alberta with 183 total screens. It has five theatre complexes in Edmonton: Cinema City Movies 12, North Edmonton, South Edmonton, Scotia Bank Theatre and Windermere. Four of the five also offer UltraAVX.

Everyone is aware that the building has no parking lot as part of the property; this is so problematic, especially given the neighborhood (pretty foreboding at night), that they are trying to make a deal with Sears which is directly behind the theatre; Sears does have a large parking lot and if they can work out some kind of an arrangement, it will go a long way to help make the operation of the theatre viable. Without it, it is really questionable.
Well Sears might not be around much longer anyway, so that real-estate might become very available. But as beautiful as that theatre might be once restored, I wonder if it can really attract people. There was a beautiful renovation of the Loews Paradise in the Bronx and it opened as a performing arts venue for a while, but I believe it's closed again and that area, because of the wide Grand Concourse and the very active commercial district, is more viable IMO than Flatbush near Church. Just before it closed, I can remember seeing two movies at the Kings: The Godfather Part II and a concert film about the Fillmore East. I remember calling in advance to ask if the Fillmore movie was playing in mag stereo and they said it was. Then when I got there, there was at least one channel missing - they'd have close ups of a guy playing the organ and you didn't hear any organ. Complained to the manager who said the usual, "it's supposed to be like that". Wrote a letter and they sent me a refund.
Recent closings in NYC:
UA Brandon Twin in Forest Hills, Queens: becoming a medical center. Opened in 1963, was twinned in 1999. Wasn't a great theatre as the screen was too high and from one of the auditoriums, you could hear the Long Island Railroad going by, but it will still be missed.
Jackson Triplex in Jackson Heights, Queens: originally opened in 1924.
Big Cinemas (59th St/2nd Avenue): had former lives as the Pacific East, DW Griffith, 59th St East and the Imaginasian.
The five boroughs of NYC are now down to just 56 sites (432 screens) regularly showing movies for over 8.3 million residents.

The Fort Union Drive-in in Las Vegas, NM will be opening up once again - with digital projection. The equipment will be on-site June 9th with a planned first evening of Friday, June 13th. That now gives four operating DI screens in the state - this one in Las Vegas (running Thr-Sun each week for the season), and three at the Fiesta 3 in Carlsbad (running Fri-Sun each week all year, and looking at adding another evening). Don't know 'bout their programming plan though... ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Taos real estate investor Felipe Cordova has purchased the digital projector, and all the documents are signed to move forward on the opening of the age-old attraction.
“We will have the equipment in place by June 9, and if all goes well we will open Friday, June 13,” Cordova said in a telephone interview Wednesday.
For months, area residents have been wondering whether the drive-in would become a long-gone tradition. Former drive-in owners said the cost of purchasing the digital equipment was way out of range. People gathered and tried to figure out ways to purchase the new equipment, to no avail. But conversations between Cordova and his grandson, Robertson High School senior Jake Cordova are making the drive-in rebirth a reality.
The cost of the digital equipment alone is roughly $80,000.
“He would prompt me through conversation,” Felipe Cordova said. “I have been exploring the possibilities of this for the last two years.”
He said work needs to be done to the facility’s existing camera room to accommodate the new equipment. The work will include making it larger and installing proper cooling units.
“We have quite a bit of work to do there,” Felipe Cordova said. “We have the contractor lined up and should be finished by June 9 when they bring in the equipment.”
He said the equipment is coming from out of state. Once it is installed, staff will be trained on how to use it.
“I am very hopeful that everything will be ready to go by June 13,” Felipe Cordova said.
Besides films being shown digitally, another big change is the plan to add Thursday night showings to the previous Friday, Saturday and Sunday schedule.
“We want to have a good assortment of films,” Felipe Cordova said. “We will also still have a concession with basically the same food that has been served and maybe expanding it as we go. I am always open for possibilities of different things.”
Jake Cordova will serve as operations manager for the company, while the elder Cordova plans to relocate part-time to Las Vegas during showing days.
“My grandson Jacob was very instrumental in putting me in contact with the right people,” Felipe Cordova said. “He has been working there for the past two years and knows the business quite well.”
He said the cost will be $20 per carload.
“This endeavor is running into quite a bit of money,” Felipe Cordova said. “The up-front including the software costs have been quite a bit.”
An enthusiastic Felipe Cordova said the local drive-in movie theatre is one of the two remaining in the state, the other in Carlsbad in southern New Mexico.
“We are hoping to attract people from Mora, Pecos, Springer, Taos, and Santa Fe,” Felipe Cordova said.
Felipe Cordova said he is unsure what movies will show opening night. He also plans to create an extensive movie library so they can pull out movies at the request of people to show on the massive screen.
He said he is grateful for landowner Gilbert Pino’s being accommodating in making the reopening possible. Felipe Cordova said he is also looking into the possibility of acquiring the land as part of this investment endeavor.
“We want to make it a good and enjoyable outing for the whole family,” he said. “I am excited to get this going.”
