Galaxy Theatres Luxury+ IMAX in Sparks, NV is set to open Feb. 12.

Galaxy Theatres' Aaron Simms had this to say about the opening:

quote: Aaron Simms
Most moviegoers can relate to Charles "Charlie" Kaufman's feelings on what it is like to go and see a movie at the theatre: "I do like escapism. I like going to the movies on a Friday night and seeing something fun." Well, here at Galaxy Theatres we pride ourselves on providing our guests with a feeling of escapism and fun. In fact, Galaxy Luxury+ IMAX is Sparks' premiere headquarters for escapism, by offering our guests the ultimate luxury theatre experience: A true IMAX® Screen, the most plush, reclining power seats in Sparks, fantastic all digital sound and projection, huge screens, two enormous 4K screens featuring Dolby ATMOS sound and outstanding guest service. To top it all off, guests have the ability to reserve their seating at no extra cost. So, how's that for escapism?

My staff and I are excited and ready to provide the thrills and escapism that movie-going should offer. We look forward to assisting you in your next Luxury+ IMAX experience. See you soon!

Aaron Simms

Among the amenities offered:
• True IMAX® Screen
• The most plush, reclining seats in Sparks
• Beer and wine service
• Fantastic all digital sound and projection
• Huge screens
• 2 Enormous 4K screens featuring Dolby ATMOS sound
• Award winning customer service
• All reserved seating at no extra cost

I'm not sure what they mean by "true IMAX screen." At first glance that would mean 15-perf 70mm film projection capability. But then I remember all the games IMAX likes to play with its advertising. Merely having the IMAX brand present is enough to make it "true" in the eyes of some people.

Two of the non-IMAX houses have big screens with 4K projection and Dolby Atmos sound systems. This will be the first Atmos-equipped theater in the Reno, NV region.

With these new theaters it's all about the lobby, I guess. If the customers are blown away by a high priced lobby they'll shell out even more money at the snack counter. Make up for all the money spent in the lobby by short changing little things in the theater auditoriums. No curtains. No masking.
Sadly I've seen a few theaters try this route. The good news is that when they short-changed the presentation in favor of a fancy lobby, the theater overall did not do well. The theaters that put presentation first and clearly cut corners in their lobbies continue to kick ass on business. People have got to learn the customers are coming there FOR THE MOVIE, not the damn lobby. I've said this for over 20 years, the customers spends an average of 10 minutes in the lobby and 2 hours in the auditorium. Put your money where it matters.

Sparks is just east of Reno so the place should do well... What a waste installing "real" (HAHA, right) Imax though.

The Jerome 4 cinemas in Jerome, ID shut down for good Jan. 2, 2014, The Operator, Interstate Amusement had upgraded two screens to digital last fall, but left two as 35mm only. It was built in March 1978. IA is still operating a 12 screen in Twin Falls Idaho. (all digital) Plus two drive in's, both currently 35mm only.(complete with 'FOR SALE' signs in the driveway!) And an old single, the Orpheum in downtown Twin Falls that was just last week upgraded to digital with one of Jerome's machines. The new state of the art Cinemawest 13 screen in town has put the pinch on them !

Is any DCI-compliant d-cinema gear going into any of the used equipment markets? The people who run the Vaska Theater here in Lawton are holding out hope they can upgrade their 35mm setup that way. They don't even have 5.1 surround sound at this point, and I thought that was a d-cinema requirement.

The operators of single-screen Guild Cinema here are playing the same waiting game. They have a sound installation that should be sufficient for d-cinema, but none of their present digital projection gear is DCI compliant. For now they are still playing a mix of film prints, and increasingly, Blu-bay discs.

The sound part for a DCI set up can be done for dirt cheap.

There are a number of mom and pop movie theatres out there that were forced to go digital and are not D.C.I. compliant when it comes to their sound systems. That's just a fact..

And where are these DCI Police? Only the VPF people have that burden. Not that it is a great burden but on top of the whole DCinema package, it may be more than a small timer can afford at the time. I know we have a few non 5.1 theatres out there but they all seem to have plans to get to 5.1 as $$$ allow. Remember, they aren't making any more money by spending all of that on Digital.

I remember years ago, when one of the requirements of playing the Star Wars Special Edition movies was having digital sound, our theatre upgraded our largest auditorium to DTS, while my competition got themselves a Dolby processor. We played A New Hope and Empire, while they got Jedi.

About a month later, we picked up a film they were losing, so I went over to pick up the print. They took me up to their booth, and I saw their Dolby processor. It was a Dolby AC-3 home stereo processor sitting atop their sound rack, and the damn thing wasn't even plugged in.

Sounds like a local theater operator about 10 years ago who went to other theaters and bought Dolby Digital plaques from the managers/projectionists instead of getting them direct from Dolby.

I just know everyone wants to know why. The reason was because he had a cd player running his non-sync music through his CP55s. His explanation was "I have digital sound in the auditoriums from the non-sync music, so I am going to advertise digital sound in these auditoriums even if Dolby won't send me the plaques".

There is plenty of d-cinema projectors out there, and with the requirement to have Gore board upgrades to qualify series 1 projectors for VPF agreements...I'd guess you have until at least 2018 to keep getting major studio content with non-compliant series 1 projectors.

I actually purchased 3 series 1 NEC projectors for $10k each last year. Ended up flipping them when we were able to get lease financing on new series 2 equipment.

I have seen very few used series 2 projectors, and usually the price point is so close to what you can buy new that it doesn't make sense to not go new and get the warranty that comes with it.

That's pretty hilarious.

It's easy to guess what they were thinking and why the home stereo unit wasn't plugged in. Someone probably had the bright idea, "why do we need to spend thousands of dollars on a Dolby Digital sound processor for theaters when a home version of it can be bought for less than 1/10th the cost?" Of course it would be one hell of a trick to get the Dolby Digital data off a 35mm print and fed into a piece of home theater consumer electronics gear. There's not exactly any inputs on the back of a home stereo receiver where one can plug in the feed from a Cat. No. 700 film reader or a basement reader. And then there's the matter of how Dolby Digital data is encoded on a 35mm film print. It isn't the same as the consumer version found on DVDs. It's possible to feed home theater Dolby Digital into various pieces of commercial movie theater equipment, but not the other way around.

Now, at any point the KDMs could have the servers verify that the "security enclosure" is armed and catch all of the non Gore board/Glue Cable people out there. Thus far, none of my non VPF people that have series 1 projectors have opted to buy the security enclosures to satisfy the studio's paranoia. Think about it, it offers them NOTHING in return for spending money. If it becomes a requirement to unlock a movie...deal with it then or replace the projector if it is old enough.

Yeah, the three NEC series 1 projectors I bought and then sold did not have Gore "upgrades" and are currently rocking away still playing major studio content every day.
