I followed the directions, I took out the spaces, and changed nothing else. The image was under 100k, and was 164 by 171, so it wasn't too wide.

Look closely because that's a mast, not a frameline for this is twelve-perf horizontal 35mm.

That's neato! Why are the frame lines on the perfs?

The format was called "7012" and was intended as a shooting format for 70mm release, the brainchild of an outfit called Imagination FX back in 1989. Don Fergus and Jim Martin were the contact names.

I never noticed the alignment of the framelines with the perfs--obviously that's how their movement aligned with their aperture but why I cannot say. Maybe that's why this never caught on--no way to cut it!

Standard 8mm film cuts through the frame line.

Arnoldscope came to mind, but that's 10-perf 35mm, not 12.? The original post was 35mm, not 70. Hmmm... So this format was a way of shooting which was copied to 70mm afterwards?

The camera aperture would be just shy of 2.25 inches in width and would be 0.981 in height (since no soundtrack was there). That gives an aspect ratio of about 2.29:1 .

It would have been optically printed to 70mm (65mm intermediate perhaps) with a copy ratio very close to 1:1, perhaps even a slight reduction depending if one is simply covering the projectable area or putting excess image under the inner mag stripes. The advantage would have been the ability to use any 35mm film stock and process anywhere. I don't have any information on the camera and whether (one would hope!) it could handle 2000' loads otherwise the 3.7 minutes you'd get with 1000' would be a problem. And I can't see such a movement as being capable of very high speeds.

Some IMAX 15/65 cameras have adjustable frame rates, probably up to 48 or 60 fps or more. In order to get a 3D camera under the space shuttle's weight and size constraints, IMAX designed a 3D camera that used one strip of 65mm film with the left and right eye images alternating (as in LRLRLRLRLR) with a 30-perf pull across at 24 fps. The alternating images were separated in the post-production process.

I've got old issues of American Cinematographer and Millimeter magazine that have little blurbs about the 12-perf 35mm format. I think it is a shame it hasn't caught on. Perhaps there's too much negativity against VistaVision still?

Very obvious advantages for 12/35. It has a slightly larger negative area than 5/70. And any motion picture film lab can handle it.

Some cameras that pull alot of perfs do it in two steps instead of one. This allows for a more compact movement, and smaller, and easier to make cams for the pull down claws and reg pins. Imax originally did their pull down in two steps although some of the later cameras do it in one step. Unlike a projector it only has to go through once so any strain the film and perfs is getting is only a one time deal.

OK, I gotta ask something here...

What is going on with pictures here? EVERY picture posted to Film-Tech since about 2 weeks ago come up on my end displaying a blurry closeup of Joe's face and a warning about 'Illegal Pictures' under it. From what I have been able to gather others are not seeing what I am. Can someone tell me whats up with this?!?

Look to your left. Now look closer. A little bit closer. Yes, that's it, right there. A scroll bar. (The Opera browser does not suffer from this on low resolution screens.) [Wink]

I think I'll flip flop the "forums" button with the "upload" button. That'll force people to find it. [Big Grin]
