From a distance it is hard to tell the difference. It's made with l.e.d's but it looks exactly like neon. We're getting some installed at my theater right now. There is also Electroluminescent (or EL) glow wire that looks like mini neon. Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 02-22-2005 07:34 PM                     LED strip lighting can be a good substitute for neon, but only if you need segments that run in straight lines. Also be prepared to pay at least double the price per foot for what you would spend on neon. I've seen just about every LED-based attempt at a neon substitute and none of it fully does the job. This is especially true for lighting up channel letter signs. It doesn't matter whether the channel letters have trim-capped acrylic faces or have the lighting exposed (in what we call "reverse channel"). Certain LED border lighting systems are pretty kick ass. Truly, there is only one company worth a damn in that field: Color Kinetics. Their stuff is really f**king cool, but pretty expensive. Figure $100 per foot for their 24-bit programmable LED neon style system. You can animate graduated colors, patterns and all sorts of other spiffy stuff with it. www.colorkinetics.com Fiber optic lighting doesn't work as a neon substitute. And Color Kinetics products are killing it on the high end. Fiber optic cabling is not anywhere near as bright as neon and costs a lot more. Plus installations are just stupidly cumbersome. You have to buy expensive illumination bases (that start at $400 and up way up in price) and those bases are only good for lighting maybe 10 or 20 feet of fiber at best. The main inspirations for people trying to substitute neon for signs and border lighting are tube damage and tube failure due to poor quality neon fabrication. Both problems are easily overcome. Going with a shop that does everything UL Listed will remedy the shit quality signage thing. If you want a real sign, have a real sign company make it. When neon is properly made and processed it should last at least a few years, if not longer. You get what you pay for if you just go with whatever company is the cheapest. Protective aluminum channels and extrusion systems with clear Lexan covers are available. We use those things all the time.
