quote: Signatures for company reps like John Pytlak are awesome. They provide actual useful information such as the company he works for, his title and easy contact info, etc. Sigs in this case actually DO add to any post. Thoughts?
I don't agree. I don't see any need for signature files at all because this bulletin board software has the 'who?' button. If a reader wants to find out who someone works for, their job title and contact information, [s]he can get it by pressing that button.
E-mail based listservs are a different kettle of fish because you have no means of finding out about a contributor unless their post includes a signature file. Becuase of this I make signature files compulsory on a list I moderate (i.e. I will not distribute any posts which don't have them), and insist that they contain at least the following information: full name, institutional affiliation, job title (if applicable) and e-mail address. If members want to include a postal address and 'phone number as well, that's fine.
But on a forum like this, the 'who?' button takes care of that function. I suppose that could leave the issue of whether someone is writing in a professional or a personal capacity in each individual post. But that could be covered by a forum rule to the effect that members are assumed to be writing in a professional capacity unless they explicitly state otherwise.
I'd guess that a lot of signature files have suddenly started appearing in the last few weeks becuase the new forum software defaults to include them, whereas with the previous version you had to select them.
