Author Topic: Post your random links here Monte L Fullmer Film God Posts: 8367 From: Nampa, Idaho, USA Registered: Nov 2004 posted 07-08-2007 02:50 AM                     "XANADU" was a fluke in SLC when it opened up that summer of 1980. Played at the now turned rug store VILLA Theatre. Why it was a fluke of nature for the film was a standard Dolby "A" release print, yet the sound system in that theatre (still using "JJ's" with Ashcrafts) was shocked Universal. The sound was phenomenal-clear channel playback and Universal asked MANN Theatres, who operated the Villa on what they are doing since the grosses at that theatre were 10 times higher than any other theatre playing that movie, which basically was a stinker for Universal that summer. People would return to the VILLA to see the movie over and over again. Yet, not for the show and story, but for the sound - just to hear the clear and crisp sound that was coming from behind the screen and surround speakers. MANN Theatres had a tech/engineer that could tune any form of optical sound into absolute perfection and his tuning of the Dolby units for this movie was an abolute marvel to behold. From my memory sakes, it seems that they had either Dolby CP-65 or CP-100 since they also had 70mm there, but don't take my word on which Dolby units they were using since at that time, I was ignorant on any optical stereo processing. Thus, this movie had the sound to make it a winner for this region. Yes, it was an interesting movie, miss Gene Kelly and sorely miss the Pan Pacific Auditorium since it burnt down that late May of 1989. At least now there is a park dedicated to that auditorium with a replica of the art deco fascade as part of the entranceway to the park..at7800 Beverly BLVD. At around $30 a roll US prices it ain't cheap, though, and the process-paid mailers won't be honoured any more. Still, I thought all ther remaining stocks from the last batch had been sold by now. I have a Kodachrome-obsessed friend who has 50 rolls in her fridge from the last batch (not sure how many she's used up).
