Well, the only thing "Northwest" about the Saab in Phil's pic above is the paint job--the aircraft itself is owned and operated by Express. Ain't code sharing marketing agreements great? Unknowing pax think they're riding on a big airline's plane (it's got the livery, it's got the flight number), but the reality is they're riding with a puddlejumper company.
Maintenance, like pilot training, is more than likely as good it needs to be, right to the letter of the law and not one cent past that.
As for Express pilots emulating certain NWA pilots' drinking-then-flying abilities, it ain't gonna happen. Express doesn't pay their guys enough to be able to afford a pint, let alone enough to get polluted.
I've only ridden on the real NWA a few times (once to MSP, once to YWG, once to NRT) and had no problems with them.
For some grisly fun go google "Northwest Airlink Pinnacle 3701 dude" and read the cockpit transcript of a couple of losers that decided to play around with their jet on a ferry flight and paid the ultimate price. Dude!
