Yeah, the default Safari browser is horribly slow and poor. This is due to Apple's incompetent browser-programming abilities, which are extremely lacking. There is an App called the Atomic Web Browser which is a shit-ton faster than Safari. Unfortunately it costs 99 cents. You can download the free version, but it won't remember bookmarks or where you left of browsing. Anyone who likes Safari on the iPhone/iPod is an idiot.

The iphone's safari browser may not be the greatest by any means, but Opera's browser for the iphone/ipod is truly awful. Sure, it renders faster and better than safari, but it's useless since they never included ability to do incremental zooms. If you double-tap on the screen it goes to being an extreme close-up view. There's no option to zoom somewhere in between. Essentially, you get the option of viewing the page from way too far away to read anything or be zoomed in to nearly pixel layer. And it's too bad, because most everything else I've seen from Opera was ok.

Since the new update I honestly haven't had any issues with running iOS 4 on the iPhone 4, places I dropped signals were areas I always had poor reception, but I haven't had any issues even if I touch the "magic spot". Still I'll take my free bumper when the application goes online.

I agree iOS 4 did run slow on my old iPhone 3G, but I'm impressed with iPhone 4 on all fronts.

But you'll notice that people were having signals dropping from having full-signal to nothing. Sure, there's gonna be variation amongst different locations by one location having an amazingly strong signal and another having just enough to trigger the "full signal" bars on the phone, but that still doesn't explain it going to zero bars.

Chris, I'm sure I don't have to point this out to you, but I do want to stress for the readers that may have skimmed that I had ZERO problems with the antenna or reception on my iP4. I would have probably kept it out of ignorance had the proximity detector not screwed me over on every call.

I will also give kudos towards the iPhone, as there is one feature of it that I had totally forgotten about until I got a voicemail this morning. Only the iPhone stores your voicemail messages ON the phone, so I can play them in any order I need and back it up, etc effortlessly. That is the only thing I honestly miss from the iPhone 3/4. Oh well, other than that one thing, I am finding the Droid X is winning on all other aspects as compared to my previous iP3, notably in sound quality. I'll have to give it a good week or two of use to truly be able to decide the pros and cons, but I don't regret the decision at all.

One note on the signal bars and all the variation you can see. The bars are not an indication of signal strength. They are based on an algorithm that mostly considers signal quality. Basically it's a signal/noise ratio but since the phone can't measure that it's based on error rates calculated from known data that is always the same in the control channel signal.

So it's very possible to be in a relatively weak signal area with very little interference and show full bars but then walk a little bit and hit a little interference and have it drop.

Additionally the carriers put pressure on the manufacturers to err on the side of more bars. They don't want you looking down at 1 or 2 bars all the time. This is a big reason (battery life was a smaller factor) that phones stopped having service indicator LEDs. The carriers realized that if you didn't have the red LED to alert you that there was no coverage most of the time you'd be back in coverage before making or recieving a call and never know that you had a dead spot.

I agree... When my AT&T contract is up I'm done with this phone. Don't know what I will switch to at this point in time. There may be other choices in a years time... In my case phone coverage is pretty good, especially considering some of the out of the way places I go to. What I don't like is the shoddy construction of the iPhone. I am an my third phone! Absolute crap... Oh and did I mention all the long ridiculous downloads and updates for both the phone and I-toones. I hope this one lasts to the end of the contract...

Updates for Android and Evo firmware etc. are very frequent. Switching from the iPhone to another device isn't necessarily going to change that situation at all.

Shoddy construction in what way? If you drop the phone a lot, whether it's an iPhone or something else, it's gonna break. Get AppleCare or whatever your carrier offers. Read the plans carefully though. Sprint will tell you their package covers all problems including dropped phones etc. but in the fine print there's a $50 or $100 deductible to replace the phone, depending on the model phone you have. My iPhone 3G flew out of my shirt pocket when I was running across a busy street to beat traffic. It landed on the pavement and survived, probably because I had a nice thick case on it to absorb most of the impact.

I had forgotten until Brad mentioned it that the iPhone stores voicemails on the phone. That is indeed a very cool feature.

My coworker whose Evo keeps crashing since he uninstalled a particular app has learned that this problem seems to only affect Evos that are Hardware Rev. 2, which was the initial rollout model. Subsequent builds of the Evo are Rev. 3 and don't seem to be affected by this problem. That's anecdotal for sure though.

I must be the only person in the world who isn't enthusiastic about handing over my life's personal details to Google whose business model is to mine that data for ways to sell me stuff. OK I admit I don't know anything about Google Voice but I'm just sayin'.

David, can you find out what the specific application that was causing your friend's phone crashes? My Evo 4G is apparently a "Rev 2" phone (Model PC36100 Hardware Version 0002). The only phone crash I've had that resulted in a re-boot was once while skimming for radio stations with the radio application. Maybe I've been lucky.

One of my close friends had an issue with his Evo 4G phone rebooting repeatedly during the first weekend he had it (early June). It turned out to be an issue with the Advanced Task Killer application, an issue that was fixed with an update. Still the Sprint folks say ATK was really designed for the plain Android OS and not the HTC Sense UI layer. My phone has received at least 3 or more software updates since early June.

It seems like I'm updating Android applications more often than the phone's OS software. I installed Yelp a few days ago. Sunday morning I woke to the sound of my phone making cutesy chirp noises. It had an update for Yelp. The "Monocle" feature in Yelp is pretty cool. Foursquare has Yelp integration, but I don't think I'm going to install that app. Yeah, you can tell your friends you're at a certain restaurant and put that on your Facebook page. But then anyone who can see your Facebook or Foursquare posts will know you're not at home. One of those viewers may feel free to rob your house.
