Wow, that Indiana ad is a blast from the past. Of the 38 NJ theatres listed, only around 14 or so still exist.

The Paramus Tenplex was the "go to" place for 70mm when I was growing up. One of the last single screen movie palaces built, in the mid 1960's. Originally known as the Stanley Warner, a single screen art deco 2000 seat theatre with a huge screen. When the the multiplexing craze hit in the late 1970's, they build a whole new building next to it for the second screen and named it the Route 4 Cinema. A small 600 seat theatre, it did have a magnificent waterfall curtain and was also 70mm equipped. Eventually the buildings were combined and expanded, and the original theatre was cut up into 5 small theatres, making for the 10plex. It is now a health club.

Wow, only 5. Well we know 2 of the 5 from the newspaper article:

Do you know where the other 3 SR prints played? I'm assuming newspaper ads are how you got your count along with Dolby records.

www.in70mm.com has a nice list of titles blown up to 70mm (or at least something like a video release box suggested it was a blown up title). Unfortunately that list doesn't have print counts or how many SR vs A prints there were. In scanning through it, I see the following titles according to that list had at least one SR print in 70mm?

I'm a bit surprised there were that many prints with SR, since not very many theaters could properly decode it. Of those that could, they may have only been decoding the stage channels and using A noise reduction on the surrounds. Do you have any print counts in your vast research for those?

I saw Last Crusade in 70mm Dolby SR at Mann's Chinese Theatre back in its first weekend. I also remember it having split surrounds. I think I remember the National in Westwood advertising it in the format as well.

The 70mm-SR prints of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" were booked at these theaters....

Isn't the SR note in the NY Times ad for the 34th Street Showplace Theatre a bit misleading considering there were no 35mm SR prints? And were all 5 70mm SR prints in the split surround format?

I can't imagine any theater ponying up the money for 70mm with SR and not bothering to setup split surrounds.

On a side note, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade was released in 70mm Dolby Stereo SR in Sweden. The print is now part of the archive at the Swedish Film Institute.

Lawrence of Arabia (the 25th anniversary restored version) had 70mm Dolby SR prints in 1989. At least I know it played in 70mm Dolby SR at the Ziegfeld in Manhattan.

I believe the titles listed above had SR prints only on (some) 35mm prints. Any 70mm prints on those titles were Dolby A.

All of this discussion has exposed a weakness with the In70mm listings. When we put those together many years ago the SR information (which mostly came from Dolby's records) was generic to each title and not print specific. I'll get with Thomas and try to clean up the listings now that more information is known on some of the titles.

Brad, I'll also get you some SR print figures in a bit.

To actually find out how many SR/A 70mm prints which were made for each title you need to get the reports from the labs that recorded/encoded the prints, and cross check it with which 70mm theatre that had SR Cards in the CP200.

A list modified based only on adverts, will probbably introduce too many inaccurancies. The latest example (although not a Dolby title) of that was "Inherent Vice" which wasn't even advertised as being "in 70mm" in Los Angeles's newspapers (In 70mm appeared on Cinema's internet adverts).

There are several other examples of films being in 70mm - but not advertised. When we did the list originally, it was proofread as good as possible by the Dolby technical person (Dion) who actually went to the Cinemas in London to "tune" the 70mm systems ahead of the premiere.

Could be interesting to modify the list with number of prints, and any other sound details - and I am sure Mike has all that in the back of his head - maybe even using that as good-night stories for Little Miss Coate ;-)

Yes. They were struck off the original negative, too, whereas the A-encoded 70mm prints were from a dupe.

I want to say that starting with Lawrence of Arabia's Restoration Release, every 70mm title that played the Uptown in DC (new titles, not 70mm festivals) were either DTS or SR mag, no more A types.

"My Fair Lady" restoration (Bob Harris) was a magnetic SR release (that is how we played it at the Uptown. The remaining Bob Harris restorations were DTS and I think MFL had both but we played Mag on that one.
