I knew the booth was a mess, but WOOOOOOOW was I in for a surprise. Building up and tearing down with the crap Speco wooden MUT sans rollers(Yes, really), actual feature film strewn all over the floor, overflowing trash everywhere, an awful STANK, grab bag of new and old Speco platter trees of which I don't believe there is a single fully functioning one... quarter inch of sludge on EVERYTHING, dozens upon dozens of rollers everywhere that don't spin, even more out of alignment, many trashed payout brains, no leader on ANYTHING, only one 'economy splicer'(crap strong variety) that is... less than operational and laden with yellow tape, there were movies plattered that had TAPED joins, no 'workstation' to be seen anywhere, just absolutely overwhelming. There's also 5 spare consoles, at least that many projector heads, 3+ spare Speco trees, amongst other crap in this booth.... I stayed late and built up World War Z the hard way, using a Big Sky MUT and one of the in-use Speco platters... Don't ask. Anyways, I used the only leader in the whole booth I could find and a screenvision ad and 2 days later I walk in to see WWZ on the fucking floor and the leader crumpled up in the trash along with HALF of the screenvision ad. Dear lord, give me the strength to turn this booth around and train these jockeys..... By this coming Thursday, I should have a fully functioning Big Sky platter setup/MUT dedicated to build up/tear down. Kinda nice having some of this spare stuff but boy did I play hell making room to set it up and get a workstation going. I finally am familiar with most of the quirks of this booth as well as my general way around it. GM has already said it looks better in my first 3 days than it has in the last 5+ years... I have SOOOOO far to go. Tonight was pretty discouraging seeing a fresh print trashed so quick.... C'est la vie, better than no film. After January 1st, who knows what'll happen, so I'm going to ride this wave as long as I can. 4 Simplex millenniums, 3 Victoria something-or-others, and one older than dirt Century. All of the theaters that couldn't afford to convert to digital are the SAME theaters that couldn't afford to do film right...and now they are the ONLY ones left! Seriously, you should just walk away. That theater needs to convert to digital or close down. Buuuut I'm a glutton for punishment and this second income is going to be pretty darn helpful. I certainly should just walk away though. And by walk, I mean jog. And by jog, I mean sprint. And by sprint, I mean run fast and far away like my life depended on it.  |  IP: Logged Frank Angel Film God Posts: 5305 From: Brooklyn NY USA Registered: Dec 1999 posted 07-30-2013 08:27 PM                        Actually the anal-retentive part of my brain jumps for joy at the thought of turning a booth like that around -- I'd done it a few times along the way and the end-result is quite satisfying when you can look at a booth you've slapped into shape, everything running smoothly, clean, equipment aligned, picture and sound in the house as good as the equipment can put out but with a committment by management that you can upgrade whatever it takes to make it first class operation as well as permission to break fingers of anyone who steps into the booth and damages film or equipment. But that was then; this is now. How depressing it will be for you to go thru all that work and creative energy only to face what you KNOW is going to be the preordained outcome of your efforts, because no matter your herclean efforts, they will close sooner rather than later close because they can't afford putting in digital; it's not even a question. Nor will they have the will do spend what's needed to do any of the things you want to do to make film look and sound reasonably good. It's truly a fruitless endeavor. It's just that this is preeety overwhelming. And you guys are both right. This is kind of a fruitless endeavor. HOWEVER, I am 100% sure I'd regret it the rest of my life if I didn't do EVERYTHING I could, while I still could. Not to mention, in this booth, I can do anything. It's my own playground. All the little things I wanted to try and didn't have the guts to do before. Anything. It can only go up, and we're already having less lost shows than before. There is nothing more reqarding than seeing the fruits of your labor and expertise produce images and sound in your theatre you can be proud of, not to mention a booth that is clean, logically arranged and conducive to a good work-ethic. Not to mention, if you can turn this around and get it running as a class operation, they might just make enough profit to put in digital before film goes away. They DO make money, a substantial amount. And with the (relatively) low overhead, they're keeping a huge chunk of it. The big hurdle with going digital is the infrastructure. They'd have to replace EVERYTHING from the wiring, to the sound, to the screens. The start of the year is going to bring one of two things: investing in the building by converting the front 4 to digital, turning the back 4 into family fun junk like black light mini golf, brew n view, etc -OR- the place will be leveled for a price chopper.  |  IP: Logged Buck Wilson Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 894 From: St. Joseph MO, USA Registered: Sep 2010 posted 08-13-2013 03:31 PM                     Things in the Plaza booth are coming along quite nicely. I have made some significant progress! It's amazing what a good cleaning can do.... Much work left though. "You can have whatever you want from the booth" is a pretty nice incentive.
