It was a THX house and the sound was really fantastic! What always stuck with me was the bass on the train arriving into Auschwitz. Every video version including the new Blu Ray has very little bass in comparison. Did we just have our sub level to high? Or have they near field fixed it? (LieMax at an AMC.) This screen has always had rather impressive sound. Pleasing EQ, with feel-it-in-your-gut sub-bass. The trailers sounded like the system was up to the challenge. Unfortunately, this version of Jurassic Park presented no challenge. I kept waiting to feel the dino footsteps. It never happened. The dynamic range was also crushed. No really quiet scenes. No really loud scenes. WHY would they neuter the sound mix like this? If they have to do anything to it, make it more dynamic and punchy. Systems have gotten more powerful over the years (for the most part). Two different complexes, both in a couple of different well setup auditoriums. Gary, why you make it suck??? It was very blah and dialed-down. Why? Why? Why? F, let this be a lesson to you. Stop this nonsense! What's really sad is there are people taking it upon themselves to rip the blu-ray AND a set of cinema DTS discs and go through great pains to marry the two onto a new blu-ray. If people like F would stop playing George Lucas on a finished product, these people wouldn't have to go through so much trouble. What's next? Walkie-talkes in place of guns? I wonder if Steven Spielberg had any involvement with the audio track on this 3D movie release, the Blu-ray disc or even the previous DVD versions. Toning down the bass, loudness and compressing any dynamics just plain entirely misses the point of the original JP audio mix. One of my favorite sound moments in Jurassic Park was the hard scene cut from the baby raptor nursery to the adult raptor feeding pen. The camera is in close on that baby raptor. The music bed is low and tense. The film cuts to an elevated shot of the raptor feeding pen. The cut is punctuated by a very loud, very startling raptor scream. The first time I watched Jurassic Park that raptor scream scared the hell out of me. Then I started laughing. Wow. On repeated viewings I'd check out other audience members getting jolted by the same scene. It was funny as hell. Just checked it out on DTS LaserDisc. No, there is some serious bass throughout the whole scene, including the shot where they show the smoke stack. I grew up watching this mostly from a TV broadcast and then the standard PCM track on the LaserDisc. I've heard the DVD but it wasn't memorable. This LaserDisc track, after listening again, is of very high fidelity. Very haunting too. The music comes across so beautifully. Yesterday, I watched the CAV LaserDisc to prep for comparison. Sorry, it wasn't DTS. It was the best post-converted 3D I've ever seen, minus some minimal ghosting. Also the film scan is really good and has a warmer palette than the CAV LaserDisc. One thing I noticed in the 3D version was a green lens flare on Iam Malcom's face on the shot of him saying "the rape of the natural world", whereas the LaserDisc didn't have that. It seemed darker than the LaserDisc, and IMAX 3D is very bright. Film transfer: 5 out of 5 3D conversion: 4.75 out of 5 The sound was okay. The sub-bass in the theatre was blown, which sucked. The trailer for After Earth which played before the film, had better dynamic range than the film itself. It wasn't as horrible as the remix for The Lion King, or the ETX Dolby Atmos presentation of A Good Day to Die Hard at Tyson's, nor was it as surprisingly decent as the remix for Monsters, Inc. Even the 2.0 matrixed surround on the CAV LaserDisc was superior than the remix. Wow, Gary, way to go. If it is the standard RS meter...odds are it is the source of any variation you may see from beginning to end of day. You can turn on the pink noise, set the level and have a good reading, turn the meter off (while leaving the pink noise playing), turn it back on and the reading might be *slightly* off from what it was seconds ago.
