A bit of humor and better production values would go a long way in improving the acceptance of these types of trailers. A lame or obviously low budget production sends the wrong message. For frequent moviegoers, seeing the same trailer many times soon gets very stale.

I'd like to see what a Steven Spielberg, Mel Brooks, or Joe Redifer could produce. [Wink]

Well my production might be a bit too violent (comically) to be shown on all types of movies, but it would be effective. Also it would be shot on video which would NOT be good, unless someone wants to loan me a 65mm camera and show me how to use it! [Smile]

That's where the creativity comes in! Produce it on DV to show how BAD those pirated videos will look. [evil]

I looked up the definition of piracy, and what is happening in the show and music biz is not taking place on the high seas or are they, in most cases, stealing the original product. Copying something of worth is called counter fitting. That is why there are no counter fit pennys, they have very little worth.

The old counterfitting laws are geared towards illegal duplication of hard currency and not dvd copies of The Hulk or the latest cd of Christina Aguliarararara (sp?) So lets get the pirate mentality out of the picture and get the federales to start going after the DVD,film,& music counterfitters and bootleggers.
They have been looking for pirates all these years on land and they are all on the open high seas in their boats. with flags and attitude. Come on Hollywood, the key is to make a worthless product, that nobody wants and then there will be no counterfitting, what,...... oh, .....thats already what you do, oh then its the people who buy this stuff that make it worth some thing. Then its my fault that Hollywood has this problem, so i have to change. Ok, I can do that, from now on I am not going to buy any more music, movies or cd's/
That should solve the problem, the industry will go away and so will the problem.
Great logic ,.....Hollywood, ...when you start putting out stuff people want to own an original copy of, then the counterfitting will stop. The product is what you are selling, not the medium, you are trying to protect the medium and forgetting all about the product. [sleep]

There used to be a commercial out that linked using drugs to supporting terrorism. Has anyone seen this?

I think we could use the set worker to link piracy to supporting terrorism, by linking him to drugs...
He gets fewer jobs due to piracy so he looks for other income to support his family...
Say he's selling drugs to movie stars on the set...
He's getting his drugs from terrorists that are getting money for weapons...

it could go anywhere from there

Wow, those trailers ARE lame! I just got my copies in today. For those not working in theaters or who won't be attending anytime soon, here is a bootleg copy in Quicktime format you can download and watch.

(Thanks to Joe for compressing the video for the internet. [thumbsup] )

Legitimate copies of the trailers are already available on the "Respect Copyrights" website:

http://www.respectcopyrights.org/hear-artists.html

Although you might argue as to the effectiveness, this education program is being supported by the craft guilds and unions who represent the filmmakers hurt by piracy / counterfeiting:

Last night at the theatre, we got a print of "The Housekeeper" which was brand-new and shipped (on cores) in a cardboard box directly from the lab to the theatre. TES shipped (separately) two of their tradmark beat-up orange chans with empty reels inside for us to use when returning the print. This is all fine and dandy, but the amusing part was that TES had bothered to use those white "tamper proof" seals on the can latches. Were they afraid that someone was going to open the cans in transit and somehow pirate those empty reels?

Make sure you re-apply the "tamper proof" seals to the cardboard box when you're done with the print.

Awwwwww John, you ruined my test with that fake bootleg download by providing a link to a real legitimate download. I wanted to see how many people would accept the convenience of a bootleg that only required them to click the mouse, rather than going out to a theater to see it. It would've been one heck of an interesting point of convenience if the downloads were at a high percentage of people viewing that page, especially since the whole discussion is about preventing bootlegging and the damage it does. Sorry, Brad. But I had already provided that link to the legitimate downloads very early on July 23, in the fifth posting in this thread.

BTW, how did Joe make the "bootleg" copy? (Looks like he may have some previous experience) [Wink]

There is also a TV campaign now running against movie piracy. I saw the "commercial" on two different cable channels last night, one being AMC. The TV version I saw is far better in terms of content and production values. What's that tell you???

If the "movie going experience" was being improved instead of degraded on a regular basis, and ticket prices were more in line with the overall quality of the product, piracy wouldn't be worth anyone's time or effort.
