just not enough suckitude lately

Whoever had print 21 of The Master before me and decided to scratch over the changeover cues on EVERY REEL--you suck.

We're not talking using a cue marker to mark plainly obvious cues, were talking scratching the entire cue and then some, basically one step short of using a hole punch.

I can't believe anyone who is still running 20min reels would do something like this, so it has to be some idiot who must use them to find the reel ends on the platter. Or something. Where to these people learn these things?

A sucky platter operator would've used shoe polish or solid yellow tape or something. That damage was done by a sucky changeover operator.

Not to defend the suckiness, but the cues on that print were actually pretty hard to see (they lacked the clear/yellowish outline that is normally seen around the black circles). Maybe someone had poor vision and/or an under-lit screen?

I can understand (but not justify) one or two of them. But this was every single cue mark. The changeover scene in the desert was not dark and if the screen was that underlit no one would have seen the rest of the movie. It had to be done as standard practice.

Which brings me back to the question of who is still running 20min reels that would do such a thing?

Only a few? Toward the end of our film days almost every used print we got came that way, it seemed. Or else just tacked on with a 1/2" square of old tape.

Mostly with a piece of sticky masking tape with loose adhesive gunk!

There is also a school of operators that CUT the film apart rather than tearing or removing the splicing tape. One more frame in the bin and off the screen.

ARHGHHHHH...

Rented GHOSTBUSTERS from Sony for a show tomorrow night. I'm still here a week after getting it, cleaning it and fixing it. YOU, Mr. "Projectionist" at a Drive-in in North Carolina, YOU SUCK.

Not only did you platter an archival print, you didn't even give me the common courtesy of attaching the heads and tails back after the show was done. Nor did you even bother cleaning your shitty splicing tape off of the picture ends. Oh yeah, and when you're done with the head leader of reel 1 (probably still on your trailers), send it back to Sony.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Judging by some of the 'Do-it-Yourself' cues which I used to see when I was still projecting, probably over three years ago now, plenty of people. On the other hand, as a child, when I would have almost never have seen a new print because in South London we got the films the week after North London, I never saw anything like this. I used to see it on 16 mm prints when I was at school, but cinemas didn't seem to do it. Just sounds like poorly-trained projectionists in relatively recent times, maybe the last 10-20 years or so.

I think some operators get their jollies by leaving their marks on prints. The way I get them, I always china marker my own cues, and remove them immediately after the play date.

Hey guys (first post [Smile] ) 35mm cue dots love then in films hated trying to find then when I had to do c/o's after 10years of making my own or having someone in work make then. I found a cue dot maker in a old box which was to be scrapped I so do want to take it home and each year I move it to a new place we use digital now and have only 1 35mm in each box, got very lucky BFI sent us a archive treasures print 4 weeks before we had a digital installed c/o every reel was fun never had to do that before or will again shame,
as for prints from hell got the only 35mm print of Soy Cuba with eng sub (well was told that) last reel came in 23 diff parts just rapped around each other wanted to slap the projectionist who had it before me took me 3 hours just to finish that reel matching breaks and the picture also lost a few min as breaks didn't match up and "the End" was gone, worst is when I got at 10min before screen in a festival can't remember the film was told "we'll hold the screening till you give the go" and the box at the same time, opened the box and the print explode out of it no can's just the print all 8 reels of it.

Automation foil strips stuck in silly places and not removed, is my biggest gripe, house lights coming up early (once recently, in the middle of the 2nd reel, where i would have never thought to check) Perhaps someone did this for a laugh. I phoned the previous cinema and they said they are not even automated. Well thank you who ever did that to me!

Check out this video of some Carmike "projectionists" in action.

BTW, brace yourself for some downright awful film mixing. (Set your faders to 7.)

0:26 - Shitty film splicing starts with a junk splicer...

0:07 - "For more than a century, celluloid film has been used to shoot, distribute..."

Actually, for more than half a century, it has not. Kodak stopped selling film on a celluloid (i.e. nitrocellulose) base in February 1950. For the last three decades or so, cellulose triacetate has been used to shoot and distribute movies, and polyester to project them.

I know that 'celluloid' is widely used as a generic word to mean motion picture film of any description by people who don't know that its technically specific meaning is a substance that is made by dissolving wood pulp in nitric acid (not any other sort), but for some reason this still bugs the hell of out me.

Thanks, Leo. Code enforcement people, through ignorance, have tried to get projection booths back into the Nitrate era for the last 50 years. Problem is, the nitrate booth verbage is still in the code books. Anything that confuses them makes them enforce the harsher rules.
