Canterbury, New Zealand Registered: Aug 2004 posted 03-04-2012 08:43 PM                        Finally, I've cracked. Riccarton Hoyts: You suck. You canned last nights screening of Men in Black. Allegedly as you couldn't get the sound from the booth to the auditorium. Have we really reached the point where a modern multiplex that can reliably show digital fare day in day out can't show something that isn't copyright 2012? It surely couldn't be a digital "print", as they show digital all the time, so one would assume they know how to make digital work. If it's not 35mm then they were probably going to show us a DVD like they did the week before. And DVD on the big screen just looks and if they pull that stunt again their suck quotient will increase quadratically. So the best hope really is a battered to hell and back 35mm print. Having said that, unlike Ghostbusters which comes from the age of changeover houses, MIB is recent enough to have been plattered, so should be a lot less wrecked than stuff from the earlier era. Are there any NZ Hoyts people on here? Yeah, I wondered about that too. The night they showed Alien very late due to unspecified problems I did ask the cheery and polite young thing if this was a digital or 35mm screening, and I swear she looked at me like I had grown an extra head. She didn't just not know the answer, but didn't even understand the question. Sunday just gone I asked the manager who handed out the refunds about the latest problem, and she told me that she had no idea, it was something to do with the computers the boys upstairs look after, she just does customer service. Sorry to hear that your Oxford Town Hall is closed, it had been running films for a very long time, from the 1920s. Hope any future evening at "Hoyts" works out a lot better. However, we are planning for a future... Meanwhile, back to Hoyts, the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Change of auditorium this week, we were in the extreme screen, "ten thousand watts of high voltage audio power". And on film. The trailers looked great, really great. Probably the first time they had been shown. And a great print of Rocky too, it looked really fine, almost no visible artifacts. Nice sound mix too, unlike to old mono mix; never heard Rocky sound so good. Audience wise Rocky in NZ is a bit tame, compared to my Rocky experiences in the UK, but its still fun, and I got wet and riced, so could ask for little more. Other than is there anyone in NZ who knows how to time warp? And so everyone stayed to the end, right through titles, in the normal reverential way one does for Rocky, right until the emergency stop, screen dark, no audio. A cinema full of people screaming at the screen. The Fox print had many base scratches and the print itself looked as old as the movie "1975" itself. A lot of time was spent by the other full time projectionist, also a member of this forum, putting it together, trying to make sure the film would not fall apart during the evening interlock. On the night the interlock went ok and everyone that came many dressed for the occasion seemed to enjoy it, scratches an all. It was mentioned to me later from some folk, that the scratches were noticable, but in keeping with mood of the film, "first time I ever heard that" funny thing though, that night our part time projectionist, about 16 years old was doing his first interlock with this film and asked me why some bloke was dressed like a maid...well its like this.... The cinema made lots of money, rice was everywhere and I did not have to boot anyone out, which was a concern that I might do by the manager With Hoyts and there extreme screen and ten thousand watts they should put on some decent movies like the 1960 John Wayne "The Alamo" or "The Searchers" I would even pay the $16 dollars they charge to see it. Back to the Future II last night, started half an hour late ("projection problems"), and they hadn't sorted the audio, it sounded like L screen and C were correctly assigned, R surround coming through R screen(!), no surrounds, no LFE. And yes, this was a DVD presentation. Price of entry: $10. Manager's freebie as recompense for late start: $16.50. It could be The Weinstein Co., it could be Technicolor, or it could be some of the booth staff at a theater in Virginia. Today, I have shows scheduled at 1:30, 4:00, 6:30 & 8:45 of "Bully" aka "The Bully Project". Earlier this week, we were told by Technicolor that we wouldn't be receiving a print until 1PM today (Friday), since the closest print that would be available was in Virginia. So, okay, that does kind of suck to have half an hour to start checking reels before the first show, but being a changeover house, it shouldn't prevent the show from starting on time. Around 9:30 this morning, the cinema owner touches base with Technicolor - and they tell him, yes, things are right on schedule, you'll have your print at 1:00 like we said. A little while later, we receive a call... Something got fouled up, and the print won't be arriving until about 7:45PM. Seriously? Way to screw a single-screen place over! So at this point, I don't know if TWC ought to have been more careful with their bookings & print management, or if Technicolor should have worked with a better courier service to retrieve the print, or if someone just said 'screw it, I'm not taking down this print that is getting picked up tonight' - or it could be a combination of all of that. Four prints of "Bully" were being sent to Maine from Virginia, and some knucklehead with Technicolor got them on the wrong flight, and lost track of them!
